Is it only me with my huge library (almost 100.000 tracks) or is the new Catalina "Music" app slooow and sluggish as hell? It's the very first time something like this makes me so mad that I would like to punch into my iMac display, getting higher blood pressure than the doctor allows – it's HAT bad. The new "Music" app simply makes maintaining my music library impossible, I simply can't work with it anymore like I did with iTunes ...

Sorry for the rant, but again: I am normally not the kind of guy who is annoyed easily. This, on the other hand, makes me pray that this is only some kind of ported iOS first step and Apple will improve the performance of the "Music" app A LOT (!) in the future, otherwise it stays unusable for me. It drives me nothing less me completely insane.

yes it is painfully slow. Spotify on the desktop is lightning fast compared to the new macOS Music program. Every screen you move to is like waiting for a webpage to slowly load, and it doesn't remember where you last were on the previous screen.

Thanks for the answer and letting me know that I am at least not alone. I was a kind of "power user" before with iTunes when maintaining my library – became impossible, i even click the wrong things all the time because of the crazy delays. This the worst thing I even experienced with Apple by far.

I too have had issues but with only 5K in songs. playlist will not play the songs I want or in the order I want. I can pick the entire play list to play but it will only play a few songs and then uncheck the rest.

I've seen complaints about the Music app on Reddit as well, including a short video of a person showing how painfully slow it was on a brand new before yesterday's 16inch MacBook Pro announcement brand new 2019 15 inch MacBook Pro. It looked like an old Windows Vista pc and I'm not making that up.

No speed or play order issue here. But my library is only 10.000 songs.
Music app is not a "ported" iOS app. It's iTunes with a different name and ui and a few missing features.

apple music sluggishness fixed (MacOS 10.15.2 beta 2) for me.

If this concerns the whole "Music" app (and not only Apple Music service within), I am very much looking forward to 10.15.2!

Can't say I've experienced any app related sluggishness. The only slowdown is loading the web tabs such as For You, but that's nothing new.

It's about as sluggish as my iTunes has been. I "only" have 90k+ items.
Thank God the Column Browser is back in 1.0.2!

iTunes was no speed / responsiveness wonder, but MILES ahead (for me). Became better with some of the last versions. So far, the new Music app is a disaster for me, don't know how to put it more mildly. Maybe it is a difference experience for others who only use it as a kind of Apple Music app, have a few hundred / thousand tracks in subscribed playlists or so ...

Praying for improvement. (Not even mentioned all the other bugs in it – even can't stay in title view, it changes back to playlist view a few seconds later automatically, every time! Marking tracks is a game of luck etc. pp.)

Best as I can figure it, the slowness is down to the database interaction. Can’t tell if it’s the API, BL or the DB that’s slow though

After ‘several’ minutes, performance picks up. For me it’s somewhere around 10 to 15 minutes. I can guess at the kind of things that could cause this, but I don’t have the tools I need to prove them (and there’s probably something in the licence to forbid it).

Not sure ‘don’t quit it’ is much of a workaround though.

It is most definitely not only you! The situation has steadily worsened over the past year or so for me, to the point where, like you, it's become insanely frustrating and nearly unusable. I can't even do something as simple as scroll thru my songs without random delays, making orientation within a long list pretty much impossible. Just about everything I do, from working with playlists to playing songs to buying music on the apple store are fraught with lags and spinning beach balls. The Apple "Music" app really is a travesty.
