If you got your new Nano already, tell us how the small touchscreen is.
How do you like it overall?
And post some pics.
Which color did you end up getting?

I am thinking either the Silver or Graphite for me. And though my wife has a Red 2G Nano, I am thinking maybe a Green one this time around for her. Last time we both got Nanos was 2nd generation Black and Red 8GBs.

I just picked one up and synced it and everything. I have to say it's not THAT small, which is a big bonus. Yes it's tiny but it's not microscopic like a lot of people think it is. The screen is great and responsive and I think I'm gonna enjoy the device a lot.

Sweet! Which color did you get. Post some pics if you can.

It's RED...I'm not posting pictures though. There's really not much to see haha, unless I do something focused on a size comparison.

When playing songs, can you pause & skip songs without looking at the screen? I am hoping Apple made touch shortcuts for doing those two things...

I was wondering the same thing. Do the earbuds have controls like the iPhone and older Shuffle. Can you pause, adjust volume and go forward and back a track with the headphones control?

EDIT: So according to the Apple site, the optional earphones with remote and mic can control songs. So if you have a set from a Shuffle or iPhone you can use them with a Nano. Or you can buy a pair for $29!

I found the manual online for the new nano. The nano does not include the earphones with controller but the device will work with them if you buy them separately (or use ones you got with another Apple device).

If you are using standard headphones:

To pause the current track you would need to tap once on the screen to display the controls, then tap again in the center of the screen (pause icon).

To skip to the next track, you would need to tap once on the screen to display the controls, then tap again on the right side of the screen to hit the skip forward icon >>|

Not terrible but it would have been nice if Apple had made a workout mode which had some sort of no-look swipe or tap controls for pause and skip. The problem with the headphones with remote is that they tend to short out when exposed to sweat.

And are kind of useless if you're using it while driving in your car. I think I'm still going to have to play with it.

Here are some pics of mine (Silver, 8GB). Very, very impressive in person. Not quite as 'Nano' as Apple's pics suggest.

That's a white 'ONE' campaign rubber bracelet by the way, just like the 'LiveStrong' ones. iWatch Nano lives :D

they are supplying a watch band ? :)

Not quite, but if you have a 'LiveStrong' bracelet laying around it'll do the trick.

Oh, and FYI the new new Nano fits perfectly in the iPhone 4 dock. Looks kinda cool.

No they are not supplying a band.

And in response to everybody talking about eyes-free control, use it before you judge it. I've had mine for a few hours now and I've played with it a lot. 1. It only takes a second to look and pause and 2. when you unlock it there are only 3 buttons showing, rewind/skip back, pause, and fast/skip forward, all strategically placed on the screen. It's very easy to just unlock it and control without looking, and the external volume buttons are really easy to find too.

Please use a product before you judge it. I was doubting the nano a little yet I walked into the store with money for it, played with one for about 10 seconds and bought one. And it's awesome. Apple really put a lot of thought into using it, and it works amazingly. The gestures just take a minute or two to get used to, and navigating is much faster, simpler, and more elegant than any clickwheel I've ever used. The audio quality is fantastic, and the device is really the prefect size for what it is. I can close my hand around 1200 songs, and that feeling is awesome. Another thing people have been bringing up is the "unnecessary" feature of turning the screen - again, use it before you judge it. Being as small as it is, the iPod isn't always comfortable in your hand, so bam flip it over and flip the screen. And when it's clipped, it's really nice to flip the screen so you can use it without unclipping it or looking at it upside down.

I'd love to see a software update with some basic games. Vortex would be great on this screen, but anything much more complex than that would just be obnoxious to play.

My only complaint is the price. The only reason I bought it is because although I predict prices will go down next year, that's next year. Apple isn't going to drop the price tomorrow. 50 dollars (or however much the price will fluctuate) is worth an extra year of usage to me.

What happens when you want to skip 10 songs or changes playlists? You do that in 1 second on your new nano without looking? If not then your not really saying much.

Also, a lot of people who use eye free controls aren't using it when they sit at their desks. For example, when you are riding a bicycle or driving, 1 second is a huge difference between not looking at all and anything besides pausing the song becomes a chore.

Then obviously the nano is not for you then is it?

That looks very cool! I played around with one at the Apple Store. If I had the extra money I would have picked one up for the gym, they are a perfect size and you can see the screen quite well. Enjoy your purchase! :D

.

Skipping ten sons, or however many you want, would be the same situation. You just hit the screen a bunch of times. But are you suggesting that you can fully navigate your clickwheel and find another playlist without looking? If you are, then congrats.

One of the reviews I read said that you can't change the dim/sleep timing, so the screen will always go off after 60 seconds, and you have to unlock it at that point before using the touchscreen. Can anyone confirm this? Seems strange, should be a setting like the backlight timer on older nanos.

Glad to hear a positive comment about no-look operation, I hope it truly is easy because my wife runs a ton and really needs a new player and doesn't want a shuffle (no screen). The form factor of the new nano is perfect as long as it is not too onerous to pause the current song occasionally.

Yes, when I am already listening to a song on a playlist, I hit the menu button twice, then scroll to a different playlist without looking at the device. The click sound lets me know how may list items I scroll to. It just came naturally whenever I would use the device on the go.

Then obviously the nano is not for you then is it?

It wasn't obvious to the person I was responding to. However, they had hands on experience with the device so I thought they should elaborate on their disagreement with your statement in case there was some aspect of the UI that I was unaware of. That scenario wouldn't be shocking considering that every previous generation Nano did fit my requirements while none of the new iPod devices appear to.

but... nobody is trying to sell one to you

so why does it matter? you clearly aren't interested in the design although it doesn't stop you from griping about that in a thread for new owners and not for people who don't like the 6th gen in the first place

Does anyone know if third-party headphones with controllers are working with the new nanos?

THANK YOU!!!!!! Apple sure is a one of a kind company. What other company can you think of where people will complain to the depths of their soul over a device that does not fit their needs. Most people, when talking of other products, would say, "that does not fit my needs, Im not gonna get that, I'll get something else." these people say, "Dammit, Apple did not make this custom tailored to my needs so Instead of finding something I like, I am going to scream the downfalls of this device for the next year of my life."

What an exhausting way to live.

I played with it in store before buying a shuffle. I feel as I expected to, it is great but does not feel worth $150 to me.

I don't think it'll be too difficult to play/pause without looking. You just tab to unlock and tab the middle of screen once. Likewise for next song but just tab to the right.

Just got mine in the mail.

Syncs easily just like other nanos. The touchscreen is easily learned especially if you have an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch etc...

The size is awesome. I have rather large hands and although it is small it isn't unusable.

Build quality is stout. I think it can take some bumps and bruises.

I can't wait to try it out while exercising and also I am ready for a really neat watch accessory!
