New/Old Mac pro 5,1 Drive setup?

Having not paid too much notice to the limitations of spinning drives before
here is what I am about to setup in my new MP 5,1 when it arrives next week.

I am of course limited to the SATA II 3GB/s unless I go for a SATAIII card?
( this is ONLY an option if I can boot from it BTW )


Boot/System Drive = Samsung 840 EVO 750 gb ( not running @ 6GB/s )

Audio recording Drive = WD Velociraptor 1TB 10,000rpm

Data/ Samples Drive = WD Black 2TB 7200rpm/64mb cache

General scratch Drive = Seagate 3TB 7200rpm/32mb cache


Does that seem a quality and sensible setup?

I have never used raid but I keep double backups and so far have not seen the need.

Apart from the SSD, the other drives will be working as well as they can on the
SATA II 3GB/s buss.

Any advice welcome, especially if you are running an audio recording / programming
system and have input on that usage.

Hi Martin,

Unless you need your remaining PCIe slots for other cards, i would recommend placing the SSD on a 6Gb/s card, I have had good experience using these cards with the 840 EVO drives. You can run up to 3 of these cards if you don't need any of the PCIe slots.
