Anyone else noticed this new button on the top right when you're in an app? I was on The Guardian website, clicked a link and it opened the app (I don't know why, I tried again later and the link stayed in Safari), so naturally I've got the "Back to Safari" button, but now also this new button on the top right.

Yep, its been there since Beta1, it was one of the originally announced things at the iOS9 keynote reveal :)

It's pretty handy!

Was it? I don't remember that. So how's it work? So far for me it's only been visible when I've been redirected to the app from Safari, meaning I have the Back to Safari button anyway, so in effect the new button does nothing new. Can it appear independently of the Back to... button?

I find them annoying. Now I can't see my cell/Wifi signal and battery percent.

I agree with you. I just find these links annoying and they don't even look very good, they look squashed in a place they shouldn't be.

I can't remember being in iOS8 and thinking 'I wish I had a quick link back to where I was' - I would just go into multitasking and switch.

The idea of them is great, sometimes it's a hassle to go back to the app that has redirected you, but the implementation - like you said - is a bit rubbish!

I understand it's probably best that it's on the status bar for visual reasons, but maybe pop it in the bottom right or left and make it a wee bit bigger, then it isn't covering anything up.

Yes, I agree on both points. Looks squished in and solves a problem I never had, particularly with the new app switcher that makes the last app so easily accessible. Know what would be better? Making triple click on the home button switch to the last app (would have to find another way of starting locked mode). Mind you, on iPad we have four finger swipe, so it's even less needed there!
