So what does this mean for someone like myself that is in the market for a pda (mostly for gps as well as pim)? I was leaning towards a Pocket PC but since the forthcomming OS will be compatible with older apps (so they say) is now a good time to get a Palm?

Or will this OS tank? Or could one hack a current palm to run this OS?

Treo700p

I have heard that Palm is releasing a Treo 700p with Palm OS on it. I am waiting before I get my 650, so I have time to see if this is true.

Although You say You are looking for a PDA, I think the stand-alone PDA is dead. With the increased popularity of smart-phones and the like the stand-alone PDA is obsolete. I think this OS will be good for smart phones, but in my opinion Microsoft will dominate.

Smartphones are the future, but I really need something with GPS capabilities and I just cannot see myself using the small screen on a Treo or HTC Wizard for that. Until they have mastered rollup screen that can be spring loaded into smart phones (maybe to open like a fan?) there will be a market for pdas simply because of the large screen.

I've owned a Treo 650, HTC Typhoon (Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone), HTC Wizard (Windows Mobile 5 PDA Phone) and an HTC Tornado (Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone) and I can say beyond a doubt that even Windows Mobile 2003 is lightyears ahead of Palm OS. Windows Mobile 5 vs Palm OS isn't even worth comparing.

Oh wait, this is Mac rumors. LOL M$ WINBLOWZ THATS ALL I NEED ON MY PDA LOLOL BILL GATE$$$$$.

Very topical as the 3GSM World Congress is currently exhibiting in Barcelona.

Microsoft will try to corner the market as usual but the Symbian OS is very capable.

Do you mean dominate as in have the better solution, or dominate as in have higher marketshare?

MS definitely dominates in the desktop OS market where marketshare is concerned, but that doesn't mean I'm going to use Windows.

I don't have a newer PDA or PDA phone, but from what I've seen, I'd prefer the Palm OS. I do have a Handspring Visor running Palm 3.x.

My XDA Exec takes over 6 seconds to boot up when someone calls, and even longer until I can see who's calling, thus meaning that I've gotta pick it up pretty damn quick. It runs Mobile 5.0. I wish I could endorse it, as the OS is stable as anything (unlike the old version, which crashed almost every 45 minutes, regardless of whether I was doing anything with it) but because of that single feature, I just cannot use it as a phone, only for e-mail.

Please do not buy anything with wm5 on right now. Check out the aximsite boards if you don't believe me. It is very buggy and unstable. (I know I tried it own a Axim x50v) If you want stability go with the Palm Os. It may be old but it syncs with mac (wm5 doesn't), stable, and easy to use. (Although graffiti 2 sucks)

I say wait for this new announcement from Palm regarding the future of their treo series. I would love to see a Treo 700p with built-in wifi!
