My wife purchased a Sony Vaio. Had a ThinkPad (TP). She has an iPod. Can I just plug her iPod that used to run on the TP into the Vaio or do I need to do something special??
If you're going from a Mac to PC, you need to backup all your music and put it on the new computer.
PC to PC should be fine, but you won't get your music off the iPod. Again, you'll need to back up the music from the previous computer and put it on the new one.
Either way, it won't break the iPod to switch. You'll just need to reformat it so it'll sync with the new computer.

You can always back them up to CDs or DVDs. It really depends on how much music their is. More than 4 gigs or less?
More than 4 - make a playlist with 4 gigs and then drag those files to the DVD in Windows. Burn that. Do the same for the next four, until it is all completed.
Less than 4 - you only will need to do that once. Yay!
If you have an external drive, just make a new folder in it and entitle it music. Copy and paste all your music from iTunes to the drive. It'll take a little while, but you'll have copies of all your music in there.
EDIT: I just checked, you can actually back up itunes from within itunes. (gotta love Apple, right?) You need to go to File->Library->Back Up to Disk. It'll walk you through it from there. Like I said before, 4 gb = 1 DVD. (It's really 4.7 per DVD, but I like to keep it ~4. I'm a fan of rather having more than less.) If you gives you the option, set it up as a data disk.
You can actually get the music off the ipod theres alot of free programs for windows just google im not sure what there called my buddy does it all the time so he can delete the music off the computer
