I use Google photos exclusively to backup my photos. I've just got a new phone and obviously there are no photos locally from the past.
When I want to look up a photo to send to a friend in WhatsApp or whatever, none of my google photos show. Some apps will show Google photos as a source but most will only let me use camera roll.

Is there any workaround to this?

These apps would be designed to just connect to the system photo picker. There are some apps like Files that let you "plug-in" cloud storage like Google Drive, but there is no equivalent plug-in system for accessing third party photos' apps through the system photo picker.

Perhaps just copy and paste the image(s) from Google Photos would be a workaround? I don't have it but I can imagine it's like hold down on an image in Google Photos -> Copy and then in WhatsApp, hold down in the area where you type a message -> Paste.

You can definitely save the photo to your phone but then I tend to find it gets synced back to Google and I have multiple copies. I feel there should be an option "restore local copies" but I'm not sure.
Workable but just not as slick, I will have to check if you can copy/paste, not sure on that.
