New Photos App - Editing Functions

I went into the new Photos app to do some basic tweaking of a photo....only to find a VERY watered down photos app! Is it just me, or did anybody else noticed this?

Quick!.....How can I make my photos app more robust quickly!! Are there apps out there I can add to make my photos app better?

Photos is not going to change quickly. It is indeed reasonably basic. It does levels, some noise correction, basic sharpening, exposure, shadows, some b&w, color tweaks like saturation. For things like local edits/brushes, there are tools such as Adobe LR, Perfect Photo, Pixelmator, Affinity Photo (which is still beta), Nik. RAW Processors include Capture One, DXO, Photo Ninja. The list goes on.

The quickest way, use Lightroom or Capture One. Seriously, its the only way you'll get an app that has more robust editing capability in the least amount of time.

Photos is not geared for the serious photographer but the iPhone shooter who wants to share his/her images to people.

There might be more tools than you think. It threw me off at first. For example, if you go into adjustments, you start off with three very basic settings: Light, color, and Black & White. As you hover the mouse pointer over each, a down arrow will appear on the right side. Click that and you will get expanded tools.

Light, for example offers Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, Brightness, Contrast, and Black Point.

The flip side is that it looks like iPhoto still has more tools. I can't find noise reduction in Photos.app for one.

Photos is a toy for me and I'll probably use it to make slideshows. Photos will be from Lightroom exports as Lightroom is my main DAM/RAW converter.

If you want to more than casual snapshots, you already have the best advice....Lightroom or Capture One Pro.

If casual snapshots emailed to friends or social media.....likely there is a world of light duty apps that can do the job.


BTW, there are many photo clubs in the area you might want to consider.

It's there in the adjustments you can add. No CA or Curves though. Honestly, Photos has most of the global adjustments that I use, though not the ability to have more than one instance of each.

Right now the deal breaker for me is that there are only three ratings: hidden, normal, favorite. That's mostly fine for me since it lines up with how I use the traditional star ratings, but it leaves no way to tell if a photo has been reviewed or not.

I suspect that Apple will add adjustments and filters of various flavors over time, but really what I feel is missing are DAM features. If Photos.app was a good hobbyist DAM, I could forgive quite a lot of missing editing features because there are other applications I can use for that. But it's just not there and of course with Apple there is no roadmap.

The cloud photo album is pretty cool though and would make up for a lot if the DAM deal breakers get dealt with.

Edit: It was pointed out in the other thread that you actually can create keywords and give them keyboard shortcuts, which helps. Still would like to see some additional DAM features like location tagging.
