My parents MIGHT buy me a new Mac(i would sell my iMac to help pay or give it to my brother)


PowerMac G5 w/ New Screen(not sure if i'd go Apple or Dell Screen put ur input on that too)

I would get the Dual 2.0Ghz and upgrade the graphics card to the normal 6600 and get the new display...with the money you save you can also upgrade the ram.
 
2.0 dual core, 2 GB third party RAM and either the Apple 20" or Dell 2405FPW
24" display $800 edu. GPU upgrade if needed.

This would be a great solid system and plenty powerful to hold you through
the Core Wars storm looming on the horizon.
