Looks like Sony have finally decided to put some flash memory into their PSP. The new model called PSP Go is set for announcement next week and it comes with 16GB internal storage.

I love my original PSP because it has a 16:9 screen. For some reason this is a rarity in the portable video player market. Apple sells 16:9 content on the iTunes store but has never shipped a true "widescreen" iPod. The old PSP wasn't really up to the task of being a video playback device because of its weight and lack of storage. This new model looks to have solved that though.

It plays games downloaded from the PlayStation Store, and remember from there you can also get TV Shows and movies just like on iTunes. It has a web browser and those in Europe who own a PlayStation 3 and PlayTV can also stream live TV to it.

Aren't the touch and iPhone 16:9 screens?

No they are 3:2, 480x320. If you want to watch 16:9 then you either have to have black bars or crop some of the right and left edge of the image.

Remember, the previous models have a combined install base of over 50 million units so it does have a lot of support from consumers. It has been plagued with piracy in the past, hopefully Sony have finally solved that problem.

Why do you want a camera on a games console?

I've already outlined why it's better for video and it's most definitely better for games for one simple reason - it has real buttons. There's only so long you can play Sonic the Hedgehog on a touch screen without getting frustrated.

Ewww....I think the old PSP looked much smoother.

Still my PSP-1000 had died Wi-Fi, so I'll look into buying this.

As far as gaming consoles go, DSi still has my vote. And music players goes to the iPod touch/iPhone.

I find it odd that there is even a comparison. I wasn't aware the iPod was even in competition with portable gaming consoles. Well I guess it is now.

But I'd like to see what Apple has to offer before making any premature judgements.

'Sony beats Apple'???

Jumping the gun a bit aren't you? Or are you just fishing for replies with a dramatic thread title?

**edit: thread title changed**

Why not? I mean they are touting it as an all in one multimedia device.

But we haven't seen the new touch yet! Anything can happen between now and september.

So Sony says it won't replace the PSP-3000(I don't really believe that) and its pretty much the mylo with PSP gaming abilities.

I'm not sold, sorry

A step backwards IMHO. All they needed to do was add a second analogue stick, bigger battery...maybe boost processor/ram and more colours to the existing design...i don't even want a touchscreen

This just looks...wrong, VERY cheaply made and awkward to handle

Luton. Lutonshire.
Looks ugly and awkward and no second analogue stick means I'll stay with my PSP 2000, also I've got a 32Gb memory stick in mine so no problem with portability.

I am unable to describe my feelings on macrumors of how I feel about this new PSP, the most foul of designs, without being banned..........
