New quad core mini & fcp x

Hi all,
I'm new on this forum. I really need to get a new Mac for editing with fcp x. I had the new 27 imac in my sights but alas it wont be on sale till Jan/Feb of next year-thats what some are saying.. A long wait.
Would the new quad mini with the ram maxed out and possibly with the addition of the fusion drive, be good to go with fcp x? Would working with proxy media also help towards getting a smooth working experience? I Would use the external thunderbolt drives for media etc. and the cinema display.
Would really appreciate your valuable input.

If you plan on doing a lot of FCP X work, I'd wait on the iMac. The dedicated video cards along with more powerful processors will be a huge help for that kind of work. If Apple is saying December, I don't see why it wouldn't be released then. I'm sure they more than anyone want to make sure it's out before Christmas so people can buy their families plenty of them for the holiday.

I already tried FCP X on my quad-core Mini. It's fast. I mean, fast enough. You still get the feel it could be a bit faster, you still have to wait a bit until some things are done, but it's not really bad. I noticed it only uses 400% CPU load as opposed to the 800% possible, so it also may be a software problem right now.

this a very intresting thread. I am also interested in getting the Mac mini for FCPx purpose.

I was gonna get the Imac 27, but it is so freakin expensive.

I find it hopeless to find information about how FCPx runs on Mac minis. I don't care about exporting time (the little machine can work all night for all I care). But I really would love to know, is how well it works when editing, coloredit HD clips etc.

I'm running a dual core i5 mbp 13" and it struggles with fcp x. So was also thinking of upgrading, the only thing is I can really only afford either bottom end iMac 21.5" or Mac mini but for the same cost I could get quad core i7 16gig ram and maybe fusion drive (ram bought separately).
I just wish I knew what would work best.

But basically, take some footage, go to your local Apple store, and try out FCPX on the Mini. They won't have the fastest Minis, but you can get some idea of the improvement. My local store had the 2.3 GHz i7, and if FCPX isn't installed, just download the trial, which is what I did. Some of the iMacs there had FCPX installed.
