Just put in Radeon 5870 on a early 2009 Mac Pro running the latest every thing with a Mac screen. It starts up well and then graphic lines all over the place and bits of the screen missing. Is it the card, the Mac or could it be me.

Most likely the card as you just put it in and everything was fine until then right? Zap PRAM, reset SMC, and check power to the card.

Thanks Derbothaus try all of that and it works in safe boot but no sound and other things. Is there something else that I am missing.

Is the display cable connected properly or is it damaged?

I had something similar happen when my 8800 GT died.

You do have both 6-pin auxiliary power cables connected to the card, right?

My 5870 is working fine in my 2009 Mac Pro....

Yes I have check them time and time again. But thanks. The card works in safe boot so I think the card and cables are fine.

Booting in safe boot does not mean the card is OK.

If anything, it helps prove the opposite.

In safe mode it is not in 3D, in regular mode even the desktop is 3D. So a dying card can frequently work in safe mode but fail to finish boot into fully driven mode.

Yes I have it back in. Have a man called "The Digital Plumber" calling in next week. I will update later. Thanks for all your help.

Okay I have given up stopped "The Digital Plumber" and sent the card back. New one coming soon so I will update. Hopefully I will give good news.

You did try re-seating the card in the MacPro or trying an alternative PCI-e 16x slot ?

If it wasn't properly installed even by the tiniest millimeter it could have created this issue, though like others I suspect it was probably a lemon.

Yes I re-seat it and the PCI thing but thanks. Tomorrow I will find out if it's me or THEM. (It could be me:) )

Thanks for all the help. The good news is it was not me the new card worked first time. The service from "buy it love it" was great, posted it back the old one on Saturday and the new in and running Tuesday and a cheque for the posting of the old one. Thanks once more . :)
