Hey there, so after having some issues with my first ipad 10.5 256 gb which had a very loose sleep button, I received my new replacement model. After unboxing it I noticed a weird ladder like pattern right between the Apple logo on the backside. Its very noticeable in decent light conditions also from a visual point of view it looks like dents but the surface is actually smooth and even.

My question is if I should bother trying to replace it and if its actually only cosmedical damage (mby a bad painting). Besides the backside the replacement model seems perfect.

That wouldn't bother me either. Perhaps because you're coming from a defective ipad, youre looking for something wrong. But since the screen and buttons and ipad function normally according to you, i'd just let it be.

You tell me what this looks like in the middle....

Thanks for the xray pic, at least this explains the pattern, my best guess is that the ipad was broken by stepping on it or sth (explaining the wraping of the metal around the logic board in the middle) and then repaired/refurbished as replacement (including flattening the backside again).

Not sure how I should feel about this but at least the screen looks good besides having a slighty warmer bottom, which every ipad 10,5 seems to have.

Your best guess makes no sense. It is, at most, and anodizing finish issue.

Bring it back to the store and have them swap it out.

From a functional view, I wouldn’t worry about it. As if I got this used or for a steep discount or a hand me down. No problem. But you bought a new device and paid full retail for it. it failed and you exchanged it for another ‘new’ (or like new) device, except you didn’t get that. I don’t think Apple was trying to pull one over on you, I think this must have slipped QC. I’ve had apple replace so many items for me over the years, including items that were clearly not defective (I had broken them) for brand new ones. My vote: I’d return it and get a new one.

I think you should return, especially if you plan on selling the iPad at some point. Before seeing the picture @BarrettF77 posted I thought it looked like a swollen battery. It's definitely a noticeable defect. Why lose value on damage that's not your fault? Get what you paid for.

I don't know that it would bother me, but it's definitely noticeable. Especially considering other iPads do not have this indentation from what I have seen. But you have the option of exchanging it if you so please.

I think I will try to swap it for a new one. The only issue I have is that I live in a rural area with no Apple Store nor Apple authorized service provider. I also had some issues with sending it in via mail where they wouldnt replace my first device (with loose/rattling sleep button) in the first place, which was 3 days old when I requested the repair.

So I was thinking about swapping it once I get back to a bigger city with an Apple Store/Service Provider. It may take a couple of weeks or months but at least this way I wont have any downtime.

Also I agree with @CE3 that I would lose out on resale value if I decided to sell it, once a new ipad comes out.
