New Rumor: LED Backlit 17" MBPs Coming Very Soon

Have heard directly from a very reliable source ;) that the 17" LED backlit MBPs will be arriving in stores very soon. Very soon as in within 2-3 weeks...

I'm personally waiting for this greener feature, plus Leopard and then am ready to step up to the Apple Store cashier. (Blu-ray would be an added bonus, of course, but feels like that probably will not be out by October.)

Anyway, assuming this particular rumor is true, would indicate that LEDs are soon coming to Macs in sizes other than 15", which would bode well for the new iMacs and, I'm hoping, for Cinema Displays.
 
I doubt the Cinema displays will stay at the same price when they get the LED backlighting though, but here is to hoping... I have a display that is dying and a new ACD would be the perfect thing to replace it with.

Here's hoping... How long, btw, can they NOT update the ACDs with something other than an admittedly welcome price drop?

Anyway, new, bigger LED backlit displays for MBPs hopefully mean the suppliers are beginning to crank out bigger sizes. Good for the environment and the display gets to full brightness much quicker.

Actually the ACDs are very reasonably priced for their specifications. IPS monitors of that size are around that price region as well. LED backlit IPS monitors are currently very expensive, so I am really wondering how Apple intends to integrate that technology into their line and how it will affect the pricing of their line.

What I cannot stand is Apple's **** warranty and aftersales support though. Dell has recently launched their own line of wide gamut IPS monitors and while many of them come with the typical poor Dell QC, Dell has apparently been very good to customers and readily replaces monitors with little questions asked. Try getting the same treatment if you get a dead pixel or a pinkish hue with your more expensive ACD.

Sadly my present monitor while lovely is starting to die due to a backlight that is slowly getting dimmer and dimmer, so I hope to replace it with a more durable model when it gets cheap enough. As it is, it is very hard to justify shelling out $4K for a LED backlit monitor, I much rather keep buying monitors to replace them.
 
This wouldn't win :apple: many friends amongst the million billion people who have just purchased brand new 17" Macbook Pros. I'd be surprised to see such a short revision as the current 17"MBP (out for about 50 days so far?) :confused:

Forsure that technology must be coming, bollocks to the greener feature though, realistically we're all keeping our MBPs forever, until the end of time itself, can't see the impact being of any value.

Umm, welcome to technology. It moves fast. All of the people who bought 17'' MBPs knew that LEDs would be coming to them soon enough, but they decided to purchase them anyways.

They can always sell their current one and buy a LED backlit one if they really want to.
 
How much difference would there be between the current screen and the LED screen? I am looking to buy a new 17" MBP soon and I was just wondering if it would be worth the wait for the LED.

The new LED screens (which is what I believe you meant instead of LCD) come to full brightness much quicker. And, importantly, don't have mercury, which makes them much better for the planet.

And the price should remain the same for this enhanced screen...

Wasn't the tint issue somewhat isolated or have you heard that it was more widespread? I'd read that the reason the 15" models are (or were) so out of stock was because of demand, not LED screen quality, despite a few isolated problems on that front...

The resolution of the screen has nothing to do with the way its backlit. If and when the 17"ers get LED they will still be using the same LCD's. The only thing that changes is the method used to illuminate the screen.

As for it happening in 2 or 3 weeks. I would be EXTEMEMLY surprised if it did happen.

How reliable is your source for this info. The reason I ask is because I have a brand new 17" Macbook Pro 2.4 Santa Rosa that I have yet to open. I really want a LED screen but assumed it would not come out for at least a couple months... Could this really be true? If so I will just leave this bad boy sealed and buy the LED one when it comes out!

Good question. I believe that the info is reliable and rechecked with my source this morning. That said, I would hate for you to have to leave your great new toy in its box and not be able to use it! After all, Apple has had delays lately, e.g. Leopard, and I suppose this could be delayed if they have quality issues or something. (There have been reports of the 15" LED screens having a yellow tint.)

I'm waiting to buy the exact machine that's in your box, but am waiting for Leopard and, ideally, the LED screen. Also, hoping for Blu-ray, but think that's probably not realistic and, once Leopard's out, I'm in...

As far as your machine coming out of its box, doesn't Apple have a policy that, if they come out with a new model within 2 weeks of your purchasing the old one, you can take yours back and substitute it for the new one?

You mentioned your source said 2-3 weeks. It can come out 2.1 weeks after he purchased and he will be SOL.

Yikes. What I was told was not that specific in terms of date, so am guessing that his window could absolutely close before the models with the new displays hit stores. It's a tough call... :confused::

Personally, I've been waiting and waiting for Leopard (and got that nice 6 months extra tagged on to that wait) and have every confidence that, when I finally take the plunge in late October/early November, Apple will immediately launch a completely redesigned MBP with a new case, Blu-ray, etc. For Christmas or at MW in January.

Guess you have to dive in sometime though...

And then once that comes out you won't want to buy it becuase it won't be long before another new MBP comes out. It is a never ending quest with computers and there will always be a newer one that is better then what you have.

True that, which is why as soon as MBPs ship with Leopard, I'm diving in, with or without the LED display. Am less worried about the occasional speed bump or refresh than with a major redesign...

Thing is... I didn't pay for it... So I do not think that they will allow me to return it anyway. It was a replacement for a defective powerbook.

This thing is still sitting in the box staring me down. Begging me to open her. But I will not give it. I AT LEAST want the high res screen.

PS... This MBP is for sale in the marketplace by the way. (I hope I am allowed to say that here.)

think they will announce the LED 17" on Aug 7th? Apple has called a press conference. Rumors have it that it is about the new iMacs. But maybe they will throw the 17" LED's in just for fun? Man... I really gotta sell this 17" I have. Who woulda thought it would be so hard to sell a brand new 17" MBP that hasn't even been opened!

whats the point of selling the current model, to get the next model when there is no actual performance difference at the minute, are you really so bothered about getting the very latest MBP.
 
Gets brighter much quicker? What does that mean? I open it and it's full bright instead of waiting 5 seconds? What? If that's the difference then I couldn't care less, let alone with these faulty LEDs.

The Dell 2407WFP-HC is not IPS, but a wide gamut PVA. The 2707WFP and the 3007WFP are definetly IPS. While the 2007WFP is hit or miss.

Dell does replace. I can't deny that. But some people go through 3 and 4 before they get a decent one. Or they just get sick of it and keep it regardless of issues.

Apples monitors are not really great. IPS is far beyond the S-IPS apple uses, A-IPS and H-IPS outshine it anyday of the week. Not to mention MVA panels, heck even TN panels, are starting to catch up to IPS and at a lower cost. Everyone here mentions Dell, but there are other displays just as cheap and better than the Dell displays. For instance LG has great 24" MVA displays and come with a 3yr warranty standard. Sure they aren't as pretty. But I have learned to deal with that because I get better quality, better service, better performance, and more flexiblity.
