new Samsung SSD 850 EVO in 2009 MPro?

Hi,

at present I run the system and apps on my 2009 MacPro from an OWD Mercury extreme. Do you think that I could install a Samsung MZ-75E250B/EU EVO 850 SSD 250GB without problem?

Is the Samsung's SATA 3 compatible with my MP's SATA 2?

I would really recommend getting a Apricorn SATA 3 SSD card to get the most performance from your SSD.

I definitely recommend a Velocity Duo x2. On my 2012 MP my Crucial M500 performs much better on the Velo Duo than it does on a SATA2 port. The Samsung is probably a faster SSD than the M500 so you should notice an even bigger difference.

Also with the Velo Duo I have two Boot SSDs (Yosemite and W8.1) plus four high-capacity data HDDs plus one internal backup HDD (Time Machine #2) plus a Blu-ray burner all stuffed out of the way in the same big aluminum box.

It just seems superfluous to buy the Apricorn Duo (~ $135) or Solo (~$90) and then the Samsung 850 EVO ($94.99 to $544.99) when you can grab the genuine Apple PCIe SSD and get better performance and TRIM support out of the box for the same price.

I mean, the PCIe adapter is like $14 and the PCIe SSD goes for anywhere between $99 to $750 depending on size.
