In the iPhone settings "about" section of OS 4.0 there's a new section right under "network" called "line". What do you think that is there for? They both say AT&T.

For me, that's been there since 3.1.3.

In fact I just checked my 3.1.3 phone, and it's still there.

Not sure exactly what the line means...anyone got any ideas?

For years you can have a couple of lines on the same SIM/contract (common in Europe for people who run small businesses etc) maybe its just for flicking between the two lines?

eg. 078900056321 (line one)
078900056322 (line two)

Orange were always big on giving second lines on accounts, and they recently became official provider in the UK

edit - just read where it was, so not a toggling option. not sure how the line gets swapped on other devices but I use to deal with a small company where the owner had it set up on his Orange contracts on Nokia handset.

It's for roamers..
operator shows the operator you're currently using. Line is the operator to which your sim card belongs.

when I'm using my spanish card it says

Network Movistar
Line Movistar

when using a TIM simcard it says

Netowrk Movistar
Line TIM IT
