To get the best MMO game performance that I can afford, would I be better off with the iMac Core i5 with GTX 780M or the Core i7 with GTX 775M?
I will be replacing my mid 2011 2.7 27" core i5 iMac with Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB.

To bad my state now taxes internet purchases and ended its tax free holidays.

I would recommend the i5 with the faster GPU. That will give you the best gaming performance.

Get the 680 that makes a bigger difference and last longer with games than the i7 will.

This is what I have decided to buy from the Apple Store online and have it shipped to my local store.

3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5
Apple Mouse
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad

I ordered 3.4ghz, 780m

I used the PC game loads whilst at Uni but that was 10 years ago. I quite fancy a go at bf3/bf4 so I specified the gpu upgrade

However I have no idea if it would be any good for gaming.

The 780 non mobile is meant to be the daddy (twice as fast) but for what I have I understand I need boot camp NOT parallels, understandable.

But if I had the same spec in a native windows machine would it run quicker? Does boot camp retard performance?

It's the best gaming card you can get in an iMac and is a decent mobile gaming card.

You cannot get the 780 none mobile card in a Mac (officially), you could put a PC card in a MacPro but thats not officially supported.

Parallels is an application running Windows inside OS X, hence it is slower especially with 3D graphics.

Bootcamp is running Windows 100% natively as if you Mac was a PC.

No if you are running bootcamp then your Mac hardware is a Native Windows PC.

Does boot camp retard performance?

No
