iPod New shuffle head phones

I have a first gen ipod touch so i have to use the screen to adjust volume and pause. I was wondering if the head phones and that function would work on any ipod besides the shuffle. I'm not looking for the voice thingy, just the controls.

According to Apple not.

Compatibility Information

* The remote and mic are supported only by iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (120GB), and iPod touch (2nd generation). The remote is supported by iPod shuffle (3rd generation). Audio is supported by all iPod models.
