Apple talked up Siri's compact UI in iOS 14 quite a bit. However, after using it with the beta (and yes, I know things can change during the beta process), I am failing to see how this is an improvement. Having the Siri interface and answer cards pop in over whatever you are doing is supposed to give you a sense of your context (an Apple marketing term that annoys me to no end). But, you can't actually do anything with whatever you have open behind Siri without first dismissing the Siri interface. This makes the whole Siri interface unnecessarily busy to my eyes since there is now a bunch of additional information on the screen that is unrelated to what you are asking Siri about. It becomes very difficult to visually separate Siri from the rest of the screen. And, just as before, you still have to dismiss Siri before you can get back to whatever you were doing.

This new interface comes with a couple of steps backward in usability too. In iOS 13, Siri would always transcribe whatever it heard you ask into written text before giving you an answer. This allowed you to easily see if Siri had misheard you (and I believe it was also possible to manually edit your question using the keyboard). That all appears to be gone in iOS 14. Edit: The option to have your question displayed as text is still there in the Siri settings, but turned off by default. Also, your question now appears at the bottom of the screen by the Siri orb, with the answer displayed at the top. This creates a somewhat weird visual separation between question and answer in iOS 14. Also, in iOS 13 and before, if you asked Siri multiple questions, you could scroll up to see a transcript of your entire session. Now, it seems only the current answer is visible and is gone once you ask a new question. These changes all make Siri less useful.

I actually think the new Siri UI represents a missed opportunity. Having Siri be more contextual is a great idea. But, this is nothing more than a UI change at the moment. What would have been much more useful is if Siri's answer cards could be saved for later use. This could be done by allowing the user to pin a useful card until manually dismissed later. The user could then move the card to the edge of the screen to hide most of it (like a PiP window) until needed. This could be useful for things like measurement conversions where you are asking Siri for information you are going to need in a few moments rather than right away. If the user does not choose to pin the card, it disappears when you dismiss Siri, same as now.

Those are just my 2 cents. I'm curious what others think. This seems like an unnecessary redesign to me but maybe I am missing something?

I agree with everything you just said. And yes things can change but in its current form Siri just doesn't feel intuitive in anyway. Thanks for the heads up about the setting in Siri as I do miss that. The screen dims a little when Siri is up but they could have used blur to make the notification stand out a little more.

The “Ask Siri via Text” feature was turned off in earlier iOS versions by default s as well. It was an accessibility feature.

That would be some good feedback to supply to Apple. I will too.

Being able to access the log of queries would be a nice option to have. Stored locally on the device, not just the cloud. I’ve been hoping for this for years.

No, I don't agree with you that Siri should ever take up the entire screen ever again for any reason whatsoever. Sorry.
Siri still takes over the entire screen in iOS 14. You can’t do anything without first dismissing Siri. The fact that you can now see what is behind Siri doesn’t change that. It just makes it harder to visually separate the information Siri is returning from whatever else is on screen.

I mostly use Siri on my Apple Watch. And the few times I do use the feature on the phone, hasn’t been a problem for me. It is much better than it has been. I don’t need to keep using my phone while engaging Siri so, I am not troubled by what several others are.

I don’t even have the new Siri on my phone. On the iOS 14 public beta but Siri has not changed for me.

To be honest I am not usually holding my phone and yelling at Siri for answers. I do however use either my watch or Siri on the phone from across the room for such things as music or timer or weather or reminder or or or....my point is I am not always holding the phone so whatever is up on the screen doesn't matter as much as Siri answering me and I move along with life

I always thought I’d want a more compact Siri UI, but I actually agree with you. It’s harder to read with compact UI.

I always thought it would be good if each Siri session was scrollable, like normal ... but all the interactions with Siri are then stored in text from in Messages as if Siri was messaging you and you back

would also be nice if messages also logged calls .... I always liked the Samsung (I think) feature of whilst in a messages thread putting phone to ear called the person

Honestly could careless about the interface for SIRI.. She's always OFF on all my devices now. Can't stand how completely inconsistent she is. You say HEY SIRI.. nothing.. but in the middle of a random conversation she'll pop up and start looking up something you just said when talking to someone. It makes absolutely no sense at all. Maybe one day Apple get finally get her working correctly but I have my doubts. She really hasn't grown up at all. Not every one needs to use something like that to make a dinner reservation. Most need her for basic search functionally but she very much lacks the knowledge base. Here's what I found.. and it has like 3 things that are extremely useless.

Am I bashing SIRI?? Absolutely! When other digital assistants are kicking her butt then you know something is absolutely wrong here. And I'm such an Apple fan boy when it comes to their products but SIRI to me is probably the biggest joke of them all.

And again interface change wise.. I can see why they did it. Because a lot of people were requesting the full screen phone to go away.. so this was just the next step for SIRI as far as a graphic change. But it doesn't exactly make her any better in my opinion.

siri works well here (altho she's certainly not always right, or useful). but most of what i ask, or need.. works. perhaps start over, train siri again?

I don't understand the point of leaving the UI visible when you can't actually access the UI. It's irritating, in a low-key sort of way. Same applies to iOS's dialog popups.

I actually use Palert on my jailbroken iPhone to fix the latter problem:
