I thought the rules changed and VoIP over 3G was allowed now...so imagine my disappointment when the long awaited (for me) Skype update hit and you sill have to be on WiFi.

*sigh*

Jailbreak, install VOIP3G and enjoy!
Even works great over EDGE for me!

I know I can jailbreak...but 3G with Skype is the ONLY reason I jailbreak anymore.

Would be nice if that one little thing would go away and I could stop having to deal with jailbreaking at all.

Hopefully Skype will work on 3G soon! I really hate having to use Wi-Fi with it. It would be great to call my friends in other countries when I'm some place other than my house!!

It wouldn't surprise me if AT&T went all "we're going to allow VoIP apps over 3G now!!" while paying Skype big bucks to not update their app to work over 3G...

... so Skype signs on w/ 3G and allows IMs, but no voice ... was IMing available before? or did they make a small amount of progress?

And therein lies the problem. If everyone started using Skype over 3G the mobile companies wouldn't make any money. There would need to be a radical shake up in mobile tariffs to pay for the switch from calls to data usage (& this is probably coming anyway) as well as a substantial improvement in infrastructure (also likely). Currently the companies' income model is based on calls and voip doesn't make them the money they need for their massive investment/profits.

Even on a JB phone, Skype has one or two problems, the biggest being that incoming calls are never routed to voicemail, even if you manually decline the call. Skype has been aware of the issue for quite some time.

That being said, call quality on the 3G network is excellent. Haven't tried EDGE.
