I am one of the few that purchased one of the old apple tvs. Is there anyway I can jailbreak it to get the newest software?

You are not alone, I have three of the first generation AppleTV's still in use today. Looks like they will be pretty much stuck on 3.0.2 forever.

Good news is the new AppleTV that runs iOS only cost $99.

I know the hardware is different but it seems like it wouldn't be to hard updating the old Apple TV software to be more like the current one. At least provide us with more streaming options.

The old Apple TV is dead, Apple will no longer update it. There really aren't many other streaming options for it. Its too underpowered for Netflix.

I installed XBMC or whatever its called now on the box and was pretty dissapoint with the user interface. It crashed and was quirky so I finally unplugged it where it sits and collects dust.

Go buy an ATV2 or the next gen when it comes out. You'll be much happier with it. The difference in speed is pretty noticeable.
