Being a fan of small phones I've had some of their Compacts in recent years and really liked them. While these are gorgeous and have the return of side-mounted fingerprint readers (which I liked) I'm not sure I would take the plunge if/when I grow tired of my SE. Interestingly, only their lower-cost phone is < 6" ... the rest are 6 and 6.5". *grumble* (And I could care less about the bezels)

The aspect ratio on these is kind of goofy too -- esp if you don't use your phone to watch movies. Le sigh.

Sony is legit out to lunch on its flagship Xperia 1. The pricing is bad and there aren't enough differentiating features to consider one. I would rather pay $1100 for the iPhone XS Max or the S10+ family w/ more memory & RAM.

Phones are becoming more mature and boring with each new iteration.

The Sony is a no go for me, they haven't made a compelling phone in years, IMO.
Which is a shame as they used to make some cool phones.

In practice those benchmarks do not mean much, my exynos S9 runs great and has great battery life, im not going to get to caught up with benchmarks.

Like I said, I have no choice and I'm happy but results are results.

Genuinely not impressed apart for the near edge to edge glass. Sony doesn't offer wow products anymore apart from their high end televisions. Sony tried to fill the void of the iPod by released very expensive albeit good portable music players aimed at sound purists. I think they have some of the poorest adoption rates across the board. Sony's been lost for years, IMO.

I agree and I blame the software. Right now we are stuck with touchscreens that are getting out of hand and software is not recognizing it.

Walkmans are insanely good, even the cheap one. There is a great difference in sound with either wired or BT compared to any phone out there including Sony's own. Best thing about Walkmans is they ditched Android for proprietary OS

The 10 and 10+ will be using Snap 630 and priced at $399/$499. No way! Snap 660 at minimum in 2019.

And, Sony has the audacity to make their flagship $1,100. Too funny.

Then in july after launch they will announce the ‘premium’ version of the same phone with a better camera, better materials and internals and all the things the phone that just came out should have had.

I think they cellphone division will fold by the end of 2020. With Apple and Samsung commanding huge marketshare and Oppo, Huawei and OnePlus gaining popularity because of their awesome value proposition, Sony and LG will be squeezed out.

I loved my X10 mini.
The coolest tiny android phone.

Sony should make a tiny phone.
They made an X series a few years ago that was small with good battery life, my interest was piqued.

My Japanese friend has (parochially) only purchased Sony phones up until this year, he now has Huawei Nova 3, and is loving it.

Smartphones are rapidly reaching commodity status. They still have the factor of being a very personal device which will help maintain momentum. But I suspect that we will see a significant change in the market over the next two years as consumers decide they’d rather spend their money on other things.

Those companies have different stories.

Unlike those, Sony actually got started in the beginning with Android (one of the early Xperia phone almost got picked as a Nexus device). And Sony actually had full ownership of their mobile division (never sold it to other companies). Sony just suck at their management (Japanese style), and it shows. They cannot even do proper product launching right (for their mobiles), despite Apple showing it how for a decade already.

I had a hands on with the 10 or whatever it’s called on Sunday. I hated it. The form factor was awful.
I thought I’d like it from what I saw in videos, but I really didn’t like how narrow the screen became.

Maybe I’m just used to wider screens but it was not something I could see myself getting accustomed to or enjoying using.

More like Sony has an old school management where each division is going against each other.
I mean there's a reason why Xperia phones have mediocre picture quality, despite Sony themselves makes the sensor for other phones like iPhones. Apparently the Alpha (Sony's camera) team doesn't want the mobile team to have good photo quality, in fear of cannibalizing Sony's standalone cameras.

We can learn from history, where Sony Walkman got beaten by the iPod & iTunes despite Sony has their own music label and movie studio. Clearly Sony hasn't learned yet.
