new sr macbook pro detecting different RAM sizes

hi, i just installed 4 gb of ram into my new 2.4 SR macbook pro. when i load it up in osx and go the basic system info option it shows 4 GB of ram is installed... BUT, when i load it up in bootcamp windows only detects 3 GB? Further, when I load adobe aftereffects CS3 that programs startup only shows 3 GB as well? also when I run dxdiag in bootcamp that also says 3 GB?

is something wrong here?

If you're using Windows XP, there's probably nothing wrong.

Most installations of Windows XP will only recognize up to 3GB of RAM, unless you're running the x64 build. At work we installed a Winodws-based Broadcast Video Encoder workstation with 4GB of RAM with the same problem, and it wasn't resolved until we installed ::shudder:: Vista on it.

As for aftereffects, I have no idea. Though if it's running on the Windows side, there's your answer.

yup i guess its the xp on the windows side.... though i am curious... if it only detects 3 GB is that the max amount it can use? or is actually using 4gb while only detecting 3?

also aftereffects cs3 is running off osx..... hmmmm..... any takers?

I think you can only use 3/4s of your RAM because I saw someone who had 2GB and could only use 1.5GB in windows

That's the max amount of physical RAM it can use. Beyond that it must use a page file. Keep in mind that Windows XP was originally a product that came out almost 6 years ago, when the higest-end computers were barely topping out at 1GB. The original minimum requirement was 64MB of RAM.

MS assumed that Longhorn (what we now know as Windows Vista) would be out long before people would be ordering laptops with 4GB of RAM in them as standard equipment.
