New SR MBP display problem

Just got my new MBP, 15'' glossy. Now I am very disappointed with its display. It's too bright and yellowish. Since I am the photographer, incorrect color tone really bothers me. I have another pc desktop with Dell 2005FPW display. After I use colorvision spyder2 express to calibrate both monitor, dell got little change in color, but the color tone in MBP is still not right.

I just took some photo for the comparison.
First two are the sample pictures:

Then I used default display profile "Color LCD" in MBP, the brightness set two stop down from the maximum. Dell display has been calibrated with spyder2.

here is how I placed two displays

The blue car looks "purple" in MBP.

The red car looks "orange" in MBP

After use calibrated profile in MBP, the brightness has been decreased, but the color tone shifts from yellowish to red-blueish, seems better but still not right. The actual look from the calibrated MBP is worse than the photo shows below.

So, is there anyone having the same problem as mine, or maybe I am too picky?

I am thinking calling apple store tomorrw to get a replacement.

The link you have is very interesting - if in fact the displays are really only capable of 262K colors, instead of the million promised by apple. whats everyone else think about this?!

I believe all laptop screens are 256,000 colours or there abouts. It isn't just Apple Mac's.

Also, on the Apple website it says under Displays:

Support for millions of colours. The word support to me means that the TFT screen can't do it, but the MBP is capable of doing millions of colours if you connect an external monitor that does it.

Slightly mis-leading I'll agree. But if you are into pro photography, use an external monitor; you'll get higher resolution and more colour depth.

Well, every matte vs. glossy thread I've ever read has said to get the matte display if accurate color reproduction was important to you. You know, for things like photography. Those threads also usually say the glossy screens are artificially bright.

So, I'd say you may want to return your MBP and get a matte screen version.

It is not a problem if I am a pro photograher or not. a $3000 plus laptop can't even display color correctly, my 2 yrs old $2000 Dell laptop can do more accurate displays!!

after an ever growing paranoia following the MBP threads i finally got mine and have lived with it for the past 2 weeks. I've come to the conclusion that i probably have a near perfect 2.4Ghz SR (no sound issues, no random dimming, no heat issues, no melting magsafe etc). I looked at your wallpapers ...the Audio RS4 and the BWM M3 on my LED look pretty close to what you get on your DELL (and im using the default profile). There is nowhere near as much purple or orange deviation of colour than on yours. Couple of days I ago went for the apple macbook pro update 1.0, maybe it helps. Even though i must admit that I didn't noticed any change in color. But it helped me with the only annoyance i had with my MBP so far -> flickering screen (not at max brightness & in combination with solid dark grey or blue bg). I'd say the color differences you experience, should'nt be considered normal nor acceptable.

Its glard to hear you are happy with your MBP. Do you mind tell me what screen you are using, matte or glossy? and please open up system preferences and go to Display.. Then go to the Color tab, select the Color LCD profile, and then click on Open Profile.. and tell me the Model discription on line 13. Is it 9c67 or 9c68?

I've a matte 9C67 screen. I noticed the yellow tint when leaving the viewing angle range, apparently this seems to be the characteristic of these new LED Displays. And for the bottom 1/3 of the screen it's really hard for me to say if it has the yellow tint people are speaking about. It's so faint that I'm not sure if I'm just imaging it =) My MBP is hooked up to a NEC 2180UX and even in comparision I really like it (despite the notorious viewing angle constraint common to notebooks)
Have you tried the update 1.0? Seems to be mostly nvidia driver update as far as i've heard.

I have a 15.4" SR MBP (with the 9C67 LG matte display) and a 23" Apple Cinema Display. Both have been calibrated with a GretagMacbeth Eye-One Display 2. Out of the box, the color temperature of the MBP is a bit too warm (measured around 6200K) and has a very noticeable greenish-yellow cast. In addition, the default gamma of 1.8 desaturates mid-tones and makes everything look washed-out.

After calibration, however, the display in the MBP is absolutely gorgeous! I explicitly created a profile with a color temperature of 6500K and a gamma of 2.2. My ACD is calibrated to the same specs. Both look fantastic.

NOTE: Despite popular dogma to the contrary, I do not recommend calibrating the MBP display using its "native" white point. I tried this and wound up with a result that was noticeably warmer (~6200K) than the average CCFL-backlit panel (~6700K-7000K).

Attached. You'll want to unzip the file and copy the .icc to /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays. You should then select "Color LCD-6500K" listed under the Color tab of System Preferences -> Displays. Make sure the option to "Show profiles for this display only" is disabled.

If you happen to have the same model 9C67 LG panel that I do, this profile should be a lot better than the default. (Although it won't be perfect due to manufacturing variances.) I doubt it will produce correct results on a 9C68 Samsung panel.

My photography teacher who also has a studio uses a Glossy Macbook pro for her work she loves the vivid display and actually describes it as "Breathtaking" she said she would never use the display for color correct work but using her color correct monitor along side it is perfect. I guess its the best of both worlds.
