New SR MBP for College

I will be going off to a four year university in the fall and will, very soon, be purchasing my first laptop. I have been eying macs ever since they got the capability to have windows installed on them and with the new Mac Book Pros, they are the front runner for which laptop to get. I really see them as a great deal for your money, especially with the student discount, and they beat the piss out of any other laptop I've used.

Now, that said, are there any reasons why I should not buy one of the new MBP? I've seen that they do not yet have boot camp drivers for them as of yet, but I think I can be without windows for a little bit while thats remedied. Is it too soon to find out if there are problems with the computer (I will be getting applecare with it, so I don't imagine this would be a problem.)?

Buy one and get AppleCare too because its really worth it.

If I had the chance, I would. :)
 
Same boat

I am in a somewhat similar boat as you. I am going to a University this fall, and in the market for a notebook.

Last night, once I had read about the updated MacBook Pros, I decided to go for overkill and skip the MacBook. I ordered my 15" 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo SR MacBook Pro. I will let you know once it gets here (hopefully before this Friday!)

Good to know! I don't know when I'll be ordering mine, but I suspect it will be soon.

Also, when does leopard come out? If its soon is it worth waiting and if I don't wait, how much will it cost to upgrade to it?

Leopard isn't rumored to hit until October. I wouldn't consider that something to wait for, but that's just me. Leopard will probably be priced the same as Tiger is now, so expect $129 regular, or $69 with the student discount.
 
i was in your position last november. First year in college, i waited for the C2Ds to arrive. I'm glad I waited instead of pulling the trigger on the older CD models. Still working to this day.

and yes get applecare.

Considering selling my notebook to get the next gen macbook pro w/ leopard. :cool:
 
Go buy it!!!

There is no try, only Do or Do Not. And if you do not buy one I'll slap you. These new MBP's are Hot, Hot, Hot (figuratively).
 
I am in my third year of college, there is no reason to not get a Mac. Especially after yesterday's update, they are spectacular. Powerful, stable...and of course can run Windows programs if really necessary. They are light to carry around. Many people buy dell's because they are cheap, half the people on my dorm floor had some type of trouble with their dell first year. Also, the backlit keyboard could be great if you share a room, and the light needs to go off. Cons? none that I can think of. If the price is in your range, then I say go for it! Oh yeah, and don't worry about bootcamp drivers and such, considering they just came out yesterday, I bet it will be worked out within a couple of days.

I have a Dell desktop right now and I don't think I would ever buy another one from them again (I prefer building one's own PC, I simply was able to get a spanking deal at the time of my purchase). Also, from what I've seen the "premium" price you pay for an Apple has been disappearing these days. You can pay a lot more on a Dell or HP (especially with their new "premium" laptops, I think they're called voodoo or something) than what you'd get with Apple and a Mac Book Pro.

You've always been able to get better hardware specs in a PC for less then an Apple. You are paying for a very stable OS. Secondly, all the features other brands don't have. battery level checker built on battery, front row/remote, backlit keyboard, a lightweight/sleek design, etc..

Until this recent update, you were paying a hell of a lot more for a "very stable OS" and pleasing aesthetics. Thankfully, everything changed on Tuesday. The new MBPs are smoking. ;)
