In the old CD / C2D macbook pros there was a `feature` which caused the screen to darken after a few seconds of inactivity -- is this still the case for the new SR macbook pros?
 
not sure if this is what yr talking about, but i noticed that holding my hands over the speakers causes the display to dim and removing them causes it to brighten back up. weird.
 
That's because the ambient light sensor which is used to dim the display and control keyboard back lighting is located under the grills. More specifically the left one I believe.
 
...and of course this can be changed in the power management area of System Preferences.

Actually, in the `old` MBPs, changing the power management settings had no effect on this behaviour (it may look like a power management thing, but it's not controlled by it). I think that Apple went as far as to define it as a bug in their knowledgebase (though I can't find the link off-hand).
