New Switcher 24!

I've been a contemplating switcher for nearly a year now. I'm having a little buyer's remorse, but I'm hoping that will fade once my new toy arrives.
I splurged on the iMac 24inch 2.8GHz 500GB tonight. Apparently the TDay discounts worked with the discount I get from work, so it was a little hard to pass on.

I also bought 4GB of memory from Newegg, Final Cut Express 4, VMWare Fusion and Applecare tonight. The credit card company even flagged the purchases as suspicious and called to confirm everything was legit.

Anyway, this will be the first personal Mac I'll own, but I did use a Quadra 950 for a couple of years for work. I have enjoyed lurking on the forums and hope that the "problems" that have been discussed here will be mostly resolved and not as common as the forums make them appear.

I think that freezing issues have been largely resolved. As you alluded to, their occurrence was overplayed here in the rumor community anyway.

LOL, I know what you mean. I just "upgraded" from an older G5 to a new 2.8 as well. Along with that, I decided I "needed" Fusion, 1.5TB of external storage, an upgrade to CS3, Applecare, and eh, a few other things, hehe.

Congrats....it's a GREAT machine!

Rather than start another thread, I'll jump on here to say "me too." After months of lurking around here and reading all the rumors and discussion about freeze issues and bad screens, I ordered my first Mac yesterday. Even though the BF sale wasn't huge it was enough to make me decide to go ahead and order. My credit card company also placed a hold on the order as a fraud protection, but I just cleared that up.

Similar to many here: iMac 2.8GHz, 500GB, 1GB RAM (to be upgraded). It seems the freeze issues are probably fixed, and I hope I get a decent screen.

Soon the fun begins. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions, as I've never used a Mac. Are there any "what to do first" tutorials you can point me to? I've read some stuff about reinstalling software to avoid problems. Also, I'll want to set up a partition to load my Windows XP Pro on, and I'll probably get VMWare Fusion. Have a few Windoze-only programs I need to access. Any pointers on the best way to logically proceed are welcome.

If you really need native Windows, install Boot Camp, then boot off that with Fusion, its easy, but you don't get some of the Fusion benefits.

If you just want virtualization, you can do it from within Fusion easily

Which apps are you looking at? Many have a Mac equivalent...

Once you get your mac the only remorse that you'll have is that you didn't own one sooner! I also just recently switched and can't believe how much enjoyable it is to sit in front of a computer. My wife was skeptical about switching as well, and I've made a fan out of her as well.

My only other suggestion: place the Mac in a very public area of the house so that when people come over you can hear the air rush out of them when they see the beauty on your desk. You won't tire of the flattery!

Congratulations on your new iMac. I saved for almost a year for my first mac and I have to tell you....it is so worth it. I have the 24" and I love, love it. Best machine I've ever owned.

Load some really good music into iTunes, and launch the visualizer full screen and sit back and enjoy. Then load some of your most precious digital photos into iPhoto, do a slide show in iPhoto (hit the "play" button) with automatic Ken Burns effects set to that good music, again, sit back and enjoy.

That's what I'd do first. It will look beautiful in the 24" glossy screen and jump-start your love affair with your new Mac!

Probably virtualization will be sufficient. The apps are definitely Windows-only, some very specialized non-commercial stuff, with no Mac equivalents. I'll do most everything in OS X, but a few things will require Windows. I could just put them on my work laptop (ThinkPad), but since I already own a full retail version of XP Pro I'll just load that on the Mac. thanks.

I'm replacing a 7 year old Dell Pentium III 866 MHz as my home PC. I tend to keep things a long time. Over the years I upgraded it from the awful Windows ME to XP Pro, maxed the RAM (512MB), added a USB 2.0 card, replaced a bad video card, etc. Recently my 19" Trinitron monitor died on me (well, nearly -- it was useable but all washed out and was making some funny pops and clicks off and on, so ready to die). I found an old 17" Gateway CRT monitor on the roadside in someone's trash ("Free! It works!" sign was attached to it) and am using it. Otherwise, it's not giving me any big problems, but it is very old and way too slow for many applications these days, so this should be a real joy of an upgrade for me.
