New switcher happy as a bug in a rug

Finally after so many month's i bought my new laptop. Has been researched for so long and came to the crunch on tuesday. A refurb 12" PB 1.5Ghz super. after seeing it was going to take 8 days to arrive i prepared for checking the shipping tracking every hour. However this morning TNT suddenly said it was in liverpool about 30 down the road from myself at chester university.
What can i say, its just amazing!
Anyhoo sorry about that. Down to business. transfering my files from a PC i have a 20GB ipod and thought the easiest way to transfer files would be to deleate all the music off it then to use it as an external HD?
Im a little worried that my iPod wont work with the new itunes on my PB as ive used it with my PC itunes? is there some copyright gayness?
finally as i said before im a total noob at macs. Can people help me out with what i need to do. eg optimize battery and such. I read it was sensible to fully charge and then let the battery run dry so am doing that now. Also can people fianlly suggest cool programs and widgets and such that it would be useful to download.

Congrats!

You'll have to reformat your PC iPod in order for it to work with Macs. I guess you could try using the iPod to transfer songs, but I normally just network the mac and pc together by ethernet.

You don't need to reformat it for the Mac filesystem, it can read both kinds. you can keep your iPod PC formatted and use that to transfer over files. That's what I did

My PC formatted iPod works a treat with my Mac. Transferring files, uploading songs, downloading songs, it all works just as it should. I can even sync Address Book and iCal to it despite it's FAT32 formatting.

Just drag over your iTMS li-berry.
then drag it into iTunes on the Mac.
and then, if you feel like it, you can reformat. *shrug*

Based on what I've read in the manual and on these forums, "calibrating" the battery (letting it run dry then recharging, then letting it sit for 5+ hours) is usually done once a month. Avoid keeping your Mac plugged into the AC Adapter all the time as this will kill your battery life when you do go to use the battery. I'm fairly certain this is the case for any electronic device utilizing a battery.

My routine is to use it until the warning pops up about the battery, then I plug in the AC charger, let it fill up, unplug use the battery until I get the warning again, rinse and repeat.

As for widgets the only third party ones I'm using (I'm still a newbie too) are the Wikipedia one, Jwire's Hotspot finder and IP Locator (gives city, state, country of an IP address). The rest are native Widgets that come with OS X (If interested those are Dictionary, weather (for three cities), stickies, translator (English to German and vice versa) phone book and the calendar). As for free programs I'm not sure what you're interested in. I'm fond of:

iJournal

it works great when formatted for PC. in fact I recommend using the FAT32 file system on th eiPod because it is compatible with either computer, whereas windows never properly has supported the mac filesystem NFS+. actually the iPod shuffle, and I think iPod nano come by default as FAT32 and I don't think you can use them properly unless they are

I don't know about the nano, but the shuffle does come as FAT32 and has to stay that way.

Using the Ipod as a HD isn't a bad idea. I know you can also use a PB as a wireless hub in System Preferences - Sharing, but I don't know if you can transfer files. I had to use Detto PCtoMac move or whatever its called, since it is the biggest ripoff ever - $50 for one use. one!!!! Oh well, thats what I get for trying to move from Win98 to tiger.

only thing about having your ipod formatted for the pc is when an update comes out you'll have to handle that on your pc. leave it in pc format...its much better if u have to cross over again

many thanks for all the help. i just cleared my iPod then used it in disk mode. only had about 40Gb to move so wasnt the worst thing in the world. Many thanks for all the help. any more cool widgets people have?

mmh just one more question. i updated itunes dna downloaded msn mseenger and a screensaver and theyve all put a device on the desktop?? bit strange and when clickin on the harddrive it shows them as devices i can eject. any idea how to get rid of them or put them in some tidy folder.

That's how applications come, those "ejectable devices" are disk images. To install applications you just drag the app's icon from within these images to your Applications folder. Then just eject the disk image.

To hold onto the download so you can back it up, save the original downloaded file (looks like a sheet of paper with an image of a hard drive on it) to a folder but the ejectable drives you can just drag to the trash.

Basically what it is is that Mac apps are fully self-contained and by distributing them in disk images means that we don't need installers/uninstallers to add or remove applications. All you do is drag it from the disk image to the Apps folder to install, drag it from the Apps folder to the Trash to uninstall.

The few Apps that do require installers are often clearly shown with an icon of a box opening up.

I felt the same way at first but I found the more I used it the more sense it made compared to the windows way.

As for widgets I recommend pearlyrics and Gmail checker.
