hey guys

i own iphone and mac and pretty much all apple...i was trying to learn more about the apple tv and possibly getting one. i was hoping if someone can tell me the basics of it and how it works. also i read about the airplay...app like movie land can be viewable on my tv thru my iphone with apple tv??

and also what does jailbreaking apple tv does?

thanks a bunch

jailbreaking is useless on the apple tv 2 as none of the apps work currently

but what exactly does jailbreaking apple tv does??

i was also looking into buying an apple tv, as well as a time capsule

i thought JB an apple tv allowed you to stream movies in formats that don't play nice with itunes?

also, i thought there was online streaming sites.. allowing one to watch tv/movies from online libraries -once JB

but what exactly does jailbreaking apple tv does??

you can install apps like xbmc which supports every video format you can think of (although it will choke on the video about 5 secs after you hit play), you can also install plex although that one currently crashes upon opening

the jailbreak experience just isnt worth it since it seems none of the people can build a stable version for any of there apps

you guys are idiots! ATV2 is ***** awesome after you JB it. The latest untether JB will allow you to run XBMC. You need to install the nightly builds in order to correctly stream stuff (all kinds of format, even HD MKV) from your PC/MAC.

this is the best guide to install nightly builds XBMC after you JB.

i was frustrated before running the nightly builds. The normal version doesn't support hardware decoding of your video streams. After doing the above procedure, i am able to view all my vids in full HD.

BEST 99 bucks i have spent in a while

ATV2 is great

I just bought an ATV2 3 weeks ago and used greenp0ison to do
an untethered JB then installed XBMC. It has been a great experience
as I can now stream all video content, without having to convert it
to itunes format, from my iMac to my projector. I haven't seen any of
the problems with crashing mentioned here.

has anyone seen any problems when streaming from iphone to apple tv thru air play?? recorded videos, you tube or watching movies from movie land??

I don't know why all the misinformation is being spread in this thread.

I have a jailbroken ATV2 with XMBC and NitoTV on it. Everything works fine. Using XBMC I'm not tied to iTunes -- in fact, I don't have to rely on having a computer running at all. I can stream direct from my NAS, or using the Icefilms add-on, from other online sources.

On the non-JB side, Netflix (Canada in my case) still works great, just in case anyone wondered if JB'ing messed things up.

I've said it in another thread my it's worth repeating here. My jailbroken ATV2 + Netflix + XBMC + Icefilms totally justifies my decision to cut the cord on cable. Plus, I'm pocketing an extra $40/month.
