Hi, new here to posting, but long time lurker :)

This father's day I was wanting to purchase my father an :apple: TV. He is passionate about showing off his photos to family and friends and I had a couple questions concerning the "photo" portion of ATV. This will help clarify some contradicting advice.

He runs an iMac 2.16 intel duo, Leopard 10.5.7 , and he uses iPhoto. Uses a Airport express "g" network.

1) Do you have to sync your photos to your ATV? Or can you stream them? Do you lose quality of photos while streaming in stead of syncing?

2) Where on your mac does the ATV look for the photos? Through iTunes or iPhoto? Can you set up custom slide shows on your Mac and them show them off on your ATV?

3) Can you connect to a Mobile Me photo account with the ATV?

4) For the streaming music on iTunes... can you play playlists that are setup in iTunes?

I think that is pretty much it. Thanks for all the help.

1. You can only sync them. You cannot stream them. Silly, but true...(this is if you don't plan any hacking, btw)

2. Your ATV will use Itunes to sync the pics. Itunes will look where you tell it to for the photos (iPhoto, for example). Not sure about the custom slide shows, have never tried it.

3. Yes, as well as flickr

4. Yes.

I don't believe that the AppleTV will play custom slide shows. However, you can set it up to display albums, so you can go through specific sets of photos.

The other thing you can do is export your slide show from iPhoto and add that to iTunes as a movie (not sure if you'll need to do any conversions on it before the AppleTV will play them). And, of course, movies can be streamed, so you wouldn't have to sync the slide show "movies".

Thanks for the responses

I appreciate the responses. I think that he will not be doing any hacking...:) He has about 30+ gigs of pictures already, so I guess with the "syncing only" option for the pictures.... That pretty much leaves me no choice but to go with the 160 g version. I think he'll like it... he sure does love his airport express w/ airtunes, so i think the video will really surprise him.
