As the title says, I’m new to Face ID so I don’t know all the nuances yet, but I’m getting the hang of it. I no longer feel I need the little bar at the bottom of the screen to remind me to swipe up, and I find it visually annoying in some apps. Is there a preference somewhere to hide it?

Also, what is it called? I was finding this difficult to Google

I've honestly never even thought about it. It's just part of the UI just like the time and battery indicator at the top. Now that I'm actually looking at it, I do notice it disappears when watching a YouTube video full screen or looking at a photo/video on your camera roll. But I don't believe there's any way to hide it otherwise.

EDIT: Found this. Haven't tried myself:

Thanks for this! Although it’s probably more trouble than it’s worth. But now I know that it is called the home bar, so I can at least Google it and talk about it properly. 👍🏻

Thought I’d update this thread to say that I did try the Guided Access trick, and it’s only a minor hassle if you’re going to be using an app for a while where the Home Bar would otherwise persis, but it’s not worth it if it’s something you’ll be popping in and out of.
