All right. So let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Brad and recently I have been very intrigued by this sort of stuff. I was wondering if anybody knows of a great beginner magazines or books that have either influenced any of you or maybe taught you anything that has truly helped you. As of right now I am just using Adobe Photoshop CS3, but if this goes as well as I qould like I would be getting more Adobe products. Thanks!

What type of design are you into? There are many specialized publications for different types of design.

Sub-areas of design:
-Web design
-Packaging
-Poster
-Book/Magazine
-Logo/identity
-Advertising
-Point of Sale

Layers magazine will show you tutorials, and HOW and Comm Arts magazine showcase design pieces. Before & After magazine (www.bamagazine.com) not only shows you how to create beautiful designs, but they teach how and most importantly why color, type and layout decions are made. Their first three articles are free, so have a look.

If you're just getting into design and starting to use the Adobe stuff, why not start out reading Adobe's Classroom in a Book series. It covers the basics and gets you ready for the stuff that magazine tutorials will show you.

so are you thinking of becoming a designer or just like to play around with stuff? if a) then you need to look into credible schools and make sure its what you want to do -- not an easy field for many. if b) then find an old version of CS2 and go to the library or book store to make sure the book suits YOU. good luck
