New To iMac

Just purchase my new IMac and am having trouble with a few things on the net. I've always used PC's so everything im used to isn't the same of course...I need some plug-ins for MSN messenger and Myspace messenger. I am haveing trouble seeing some videos...i downloaded real player, but still doesn't work on some sites. Not sure what the "this may contain an application" tab means when i download something. Also curious about the "boot camp" program...does it make your mac just like a pc with windows?...can you do everything in windows just like a PC?...I know, alot of questions, so whatever you can provide will be helpful.

bootcamp lets you install windows onto your mac....then you can reboot your mac and boot up into windows..its like a windows machine and a mac machine in one

Search around on the forums here a little bit. SOme quick notes:

- google "flip4mac" - it's a plugin for quicktime that will allow you to watch most video formats. VLC is another great program that can play almost any video format.

- "this may contain an application" means just that- it's a mac's way of telling you something about what you just downloaded

- Boot Camp - there is a TON of info on it. Do a quick search. It basically allows you to install windows on your mac and dual boot- giving you the option of using windows or mac os x when you restart the computer. You must own a copy of windows.

Perian is an essential addition for video. It contains loads of extra codecs and allows you to play AVI files in all sorts of applications including Front Row. You will also want the Flip4Mac extension for Windows Media files, although be warned it won't work with anything infected with Windows DRM because Microsoft won't share the code with Telestream.

The MySpace messenger doesn't work with Macs. Since MySpace is using Microsoft tools and servers, not much works correctly unless you're using Internet Exploder on Windows.

MSN Messenger is another matter. The Mac version is extremely limited, as it's version 6 compatible. Adium, a multi-protocol chat client, is version 7, and Mercury Messenger is version 7.5 compatible. You need either Mercury Messenger or aMSN to do video.

any mac messenger lets you do audio + video? or at least just audio?

i got Adium to work on msn, but can't figure out how to switch users...it signs me in everytime i open it...how can u sign in as someone else?

to the top...still looking for info on how to switch users on adium.

I recently found out that eBuddy now supports webbased MySpace IM (also MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Gtalk), very handy on a Mac or Linux: http://www.ebuddy.com/#myspace

libpurple now supports MyspaceIM, so I'd assume it'll be in Adium soon. MSN already works in Adium.
