Hi all. I'm new to the forums and recently new to the iPhone 3gs! I've had it for a couple of weeks and I love it. I've been doing some reading on jailbreaking since I am going to be in Europe for about a month and would like to use my phone.

It doesn't look like I can jailbreak/unlock it since I am on 3.1.2 and the baseband is 5.11. But I do see that there are some places in Europe that unlock phones since there are multiple official carriers. I will be in the UK, France and Spain.

My question is, will they unlock an AT&T iPhone so that I can use their sim card? or do they only unlock European iPhones? I'm not really sure how it works.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Whats up, welcome to the cult.

lol but on the real,
I have not broke'n my phone out yet, but from everything I have been seeing on these forums. its possible for you to back-date your fireware and all that good stuff, it's just gonna take some time, patients and trial and error.

and from what I have seen, iphone have been unlocked for alotta different carriers, you just have to research how to unlock your phone.

If i knew how to do it I would help out but I dont, not yet anyways.

I haven't emailed any shops in the UK, but I guess I could. Was hoping someone here would have some insight. There seems to be a lot of opinions but not a lot of answers. Thanks.

If your baseband is updated to 5.11.xx you cannot unlock it.

You can downgrade the firmware, but not the baseband.

There is no unlock currently available for 5.11.xx, despite trial and error, patience or good stuff.

I get that. I guess I'll just have to be patient and hope someone figures it out. Was hoping I could do it in France but I guess they only unlock their own phones.

So sell your phone and get an unlocked one over there

lol. I'm definitely thinking about it but that is serious $$$. I wish I was rollin' like that! I have my old BB to take over for calls & text but will likely get the AT&T roaming pkg for 20MB just in case. I know me too well. I will definitely need data on the iphone.

I'm hoping that when we eventually get a 2nd carrier in the US, AT&T will be forced to unlock phones. I still don't know how they can get around the FCC ruling that all cell phones should be able to be unlocked. Such a scam!
