iPhone New to iPhone want to try jailbreaking..

I am a long time Android user and I have had every android phone I have ever owned rooted. I recently saw an amazing deal on an iPhone 5s on CL and thought what the hell ill give it a shot so I bought it. I want to jailbreak and see how I like it.

I tried following

that tutorial but when I download the program from the link in the description it says its for iOS 6 am I downloading the wrong file? If so can someone point me in the right direction?

Also I am wondering what are the benefits? When you root an android device it is basically all benefit. Is it the same with jailbreaking? I really would love to try some of the themes and tweaks that are available. I would appreciate all your input, thanks!

The benefits to jailbreak is that it allows you to install stuff that Apple won't let you install.

As an example…the f.lux tweak changes the color of your screen at night to reduce the amount of blue light. It makes the screen warmer and thus easier to see. It also eliminates being blinded by your screen in the dark.

But the things f.lux does require access that Apple will never give to devs in the App store. Alternate SMS apps (BiteSMS), calling from the lockscreen without having to unlock, SMS Quick Compose, Quick Reply, etc.

The only downside is that responsibility for checking things out (compatibility, iOS version, etc) is conferred to the user. If you install stuff without doing your research first then you could put yourself in a spot where you have to restore. Not a big deal when Apple is still signing jailbreakable versions of iOS, but a very big deal if you have to restore to a version of iOS that's not jailbreakable. It's also a big deal if you need service. Always restore your iPhone to stock (if you can) if you take your iPhone in to Apple for service. Apple may void the warranty on jailbroken devices so if you don't do this and they see it they may refuse to work on your device. They may also refuse to work on your device if it's jailbroken but not under warranty.

So, do your research and use due caution.

After you jailbreak, install winterboard from cydia. Download themes (make sure they are compatible themes for your version and device) from cydia

After you've installed the theme. Go to your home screen and look for the app winterboard. Apply the theme and respring

Thank you very much for your help so far! How can you check to see if a theme is compatible I dont see anywhere that states what version or device they are compatible with?

Ah! This is that research I talked about.

Unfortunately, Cydia is not like the App Store and Google's store. You have to investigate.

Do a Google search and see what turns up. If it's recent (say 2012-2014) it's most likely iOS 6 or iOS 7. You can also check Cydia's description. Generally, each description also has a spot for "Recent Changes" or some such thing. You're looking for dates. Stuff older than late 2013 is probably going to be iOS 6 and below.

You can also ask here. It's why we're here.

The reason Cydia stocks a lot of old stuff is that there are still people out there with older devices using versions of iOS from 3 on up to 7. So, stuff stays up because it's relevant to those users. That's why the research. Sometimes the devs help though and tell you in the description what it can be used on.

Note however, that a lot of the iOS 7 specific themes will say they are iOS 7. There currently aren't a lot of them

Alright thank you very much I have found some nice themes here but the real nice ones are paid. I know this isnt really official like "apple store" or "google play" like you stated so is it safe to be purchasing themes with my credit card? Any chance of fraud? Also it seems like when I click on purchase it just stays on the loading screen then eventually fails. Any reason for that?

Yes, it's safe. Think of Cydia as Amazon. Amazon handles the billing for all the various sellers out there. That's what Cydia does. Unless a dev is specific, your billing is handled through Cydia (Saurik). Saurik (Jay Freeman) is above board because he has to be. If Cydia wasn't trustworthy no devs would sell through Cydia and Saurik would be out money.

You need to link Cydia to an account (Manage Account link on home tab). Either Google or some other option that Cydia gives you. Cydia does not do direct CC billing however. They process payments either through Paypal or Amazon, depending on what you select at time of purchase.

The account you link with Cydia is simply to keep track of your purchases so that if you ever restore or uninstall and want to reinstall, Cydia knows what you've bought.

No actual CC data changes hand because of the fact that the transactions are handled through Amazon or Paypal.

Thanks, this is awesome! Just purchased a couple themese in the screenshot it shows they have widgets.How do I get those widgets to show up on my homescreen?

If they are the type of widgets they usually are they are iWidgets. Do a search in Cydia for iWidget (it's free) and install that and your theme's widgets.

The default for iWidget is to press and hold on a blank area of your screen. Your screen will "flip" and you'll be presented with the iWidget options that you can put on your homescreen. Select the one you want and then configure it's settings. Then apply. Once it's on the screen you can move it around where you want it by placing your icons in "wiggle" mode and moving the widget around. Careful not to press on the "X" or it will be removed.

Repeat for each widget you want on whatever screen you want. You can mix and match on different screens or have more than one of the same if you like.

Each of the widgets are little HTML code packages so if you want to change something (like a weather code say, for weather based widgets) you'll need something like iFile (there's a free version, but it's totally worth the price to buy it) to navigate to where the widget is in the file system and edit the HTML.

Alright I got it thank you so much! You have been extremely helpful! If I knew jailbreaking was this awesome I would have looked into it much sooner!
