Ok, so I just got my new iPhone 3GS. Haven't opened it yet. Probably won't have time till tomorrow. Itching to do it though:-( Must resist, but resistance may be futile.

Meanwhile, just wanting to ask for tips for a user new to iPhone. I know this is a huge and broad topic, so I can narrow it down to this...I was a blackberry user, and now am sick of it, but am wanting to find out:

1. Care of battery...1 full drain/charge cycle first before using it regularly?
2. Must have applications
3. Resetting and restarting the iPhone..ok, what is the difference except one you hold the home button to do it, the other you don't. Does one clear all processes and the other does not, much like BB devices, where if you want a nice clean restart, you do a battery pull?
4. Experienced configs to optimise iPhone performance...yes, there are plenty around the forum RE to optimise battery life, turn off 3G, but I'm asking about tips in maintaining peak performance. I use to have a Windows Mobile, and it slowed down in just a month. Daily restarts/resets? Restart/reset after apps installs?
5. Any other useful tips

Thanks. And may have more noob questions later.

1. I guess that is "standard". But I never did it, and my battery is fine. Can't hurt though.

2. I like Shazam, Pandora, and Photogene.

3. The home button will close the current app, and all of it's process. You can do a regular power down by holding the lock button and sliding the slider. Or you can do a hard reboot (similar to a battery pull) by holding the home and lock buttons until the phone shows the apple logo.

The good ol' Blackberry battery pull! I always hated that about Blackberries.

1. I've had my iphone for about a year and a half now. My iphone is usually connected to wifi and is checking for e-mail updates every hour (I have push e-mail enabled as well). With average usage throughout the day, I have to recharge about every other day or so. With wifi enabled (or manual e-mail checking) I can get maybe 3-5 days on a charge. I've power cycled it to see if it helps, but there isn't really a noticeable difference.

2. I use MusicID (Identifies music/lyrics), Pandora (Internet Radio), Facebook, Movies (showtimes)

3. Turning off your phone and resetting basically do the same thing. Both will free up memory so apps can run smoothly. The new 3GS phone has twice the memory as the 3G so your phone will run a bit snappier and won't run into memory problems (app crashes) as often.

4. Same as above, there are apps that will tell you how much memory your phone is using and let you clear up some space. The iphone does this automatically, but it does it after you close an application and stop using it for awhile. Restarting your phone will clear the memory too.

5. You can set your home button to go to a difference place when you double tap it (in settings). You can also scroll through your home screens by tapping on either side of the dots at the bottom.

thanks for your suggestions everyone.

And to The General, thank you kindly. You should be awarded a prize for demonstrating an IQ of greater than 70. I am indeed impressed!
