I recently got my first apple product ever an Iphone 6s and I'm doing the Apple Music Trial. I put itunes on my laptop and added all my own music that isn't available on apple music that is drm free to itunes. When I go to music on my iphone it is downloading all my music automatically, but I don't want this since I only have a 16gb Iphone so I don't want all my space going to music. In Itunes how do I choose what music for it to download locally to the iphone?

Also, if I now put Itunes on my desktop will it automatically download to that computer the drm free music I added on the laptop itunes? Note all the drm free music I added was music that apple music doesn't offer, if it was on apple music already I didn't add it. So is it downloading that drm free music on my desktop or does it play it from the cloud?

How does this all work?

When your phone is connected to your computer, open iTunes, select your phone in iTunes, and you can check which music and playlists you want to sync - you can also tell it NOT to sync, if that's your preference.

I've read more up on apple music. Is it true that it will play all music I own that isn't on Apple music in itunes on any device by streaming it? So it will stream this music to my iPhone without having to download it to the phone?

Because right now it is downloading the non apple music songs and it is taking up lots of space that I don't have.

That's not normal behavior of Apple Music. Are you by any chance telling it to download the songs by tapping the cloud icon? Or are you syncing with iTunes? You don't have to do either in order to play your iCloud Music Library because it is just that: in the cloud. It's primary behavior is to stream music from the cloud and not take up space on your phone. I've been using Apple Music since launch and iTunes Match from launch before that and I've never had that happen.

Well I don't have apple match, do I need that to stream my own music from the cloud? I thought apple music gave that option as well. I'm not clicking download it is just syncing and downloading all of my music.

No, you don't need iTunes Match, as Apple Music does basically the same thing, plus you have access to the Apple Music library. When you say syncing, do you mean you are syncing with iTunes? Apple Music doesn't "sync" in the same traditional way that iTunes does and that may be the problem you're having. Once you add music to your iTunes library and it matches it in the cloud, you don't have to do anything else, Apple Music will make sure all of your devices have access to the new music. You don't have to sync your devices with iTunes or anything like that.
