I have heard something about having a tether jailbreak such as BlackRa1n will require you to re-jailbreak your iPhone EVERYTIME you reboot. I never wanted to jailbreak because of this.. BUT, My friend told me that the new version on BlackRa1n, this is no longer and issue as she iPod Touch 2G doesn't do this. Can anyone confirm this? i don't wanna be stuck without a phone when not around a computer.

Thanks in advance

there is no newer version of blackra1n. she has a 2g ipod, the older bootrom. the 3g ipods have newer bootroms which make it a tethered jailbreak. iphone 3gs before week 40 have an untethered jailbreak. apple decided to update the iphone bootroms before they released a newer version of the iphone. you will have a tethered jailbreak, and i dont see a point in jailbreaking if its gonna be tethered because what happens if u install an app from cydia, and it needs to reboot, or if u accidently turn ur phone off, or if it just randomly shuts off (like mine did). then you cant make an emergency call if u need to. so its better to just wait since geohot has already made an untethered jailbreak for the ipod touch 3g, but he wont release it until he makes an untethered jailbreak for the 3gs. dont jailbreak...its not the best idea in the world if u will have a tethered one.

So, I used what I found for finding the week #, and I was told the 3rd digit was the year, and 4th and 5th digit was week #. Mine is a year: 2009 with a week # of 38. So mine should be able to be untether jailbroken?

Some week 38 3GS phones have the older version of iBoot (which allows an untethered jailbreak), and others have the newer version (which means tethered). You'll have to check your iBoot version to know for sure. Follow the instructions in this thread:

Do you turn your iPhone off often? I have a tethered Touch, and I've found the tethering really isn't a problem; the only time I actually reboot is when I run the battery all the way down, which isn't often. If you're careful, you don't usually have to worry about rebooting. (You probably already know this, but it's not a problem when you use the lock button; it's only for complete power down that you have to re-run blackra1n.)

Incidentally, people keep spreading this rumor that geohot has an untethered jailbreak but is waiting to release it. This is only a rumor, and geohot himself has made plenty of public statements that he's done working on the iPhone for awhile, so I wouldn't hold your breath based on the wishful thinking of a couple random internet people.

no geohot posted on twitter that he has an untethered ipod touch 3g.

also week 38, you should have an untethered jailbreak. man i told my dad we should have gone like a week earlier and maybe i would have had the older bootrom. damn! mines week 43.

Yes, he vaguely implied that he HAS one. But it's a pretty big leap from that vague Tweet to "he wont release it until he makes an untethered jailbreak for the 3gs". First of all, he's never mentioned anything about an exploit that works on the Touch, but needs some more work to be used on the 3GS. I have no idea where you got this from, but you seem to be the only one who knows anything about it.

Considering the way entitled morons have been harassing him for an untethered jailbreak, we'll be lucky if he ever does another release for the iPhone OS. The only hints of him actually releasing the untethered JB have been the promise to work on one if he won the balloon contest (which he didn't) and the tweet asking who would be interested in a dongle that boots tethered jailbroken devices on the road.

Meanwhile you see things like this popping up every couple of days:

geohot said:

(Adding something to hosts as 127.0.0.1 is a way of preventing your computer from accessing that site.)

I have no idea how you can read that and think that he will EVER release it. First of all, he's never said ANYTHING of the sort. And he has said MANY MANY times that he has NO intention of releasing an untethered jailbreak! How much clearer could he have made it??

Are you maybe thinking of the Chronic Dev folks, who considered holding the greenpois0n release until the next-gen iPhone is released? Of course, they seem to have disappeared/also been turned off by the entitled morons, so who knows if that's ever coming out.

PLEASE stop spreading misinformation. PLEASE read the thread I linked. A week 38 3GS is NOT guaranteed to have an untethered jailbreak:

Because different plants began using the new version of iBoot at different times, there is no firm rule for which phones will be safe; in general, however, a phone manufactured in week 36 or earlier will have an untethered jailbreak, 37-40 is iffy, and 41 and higher will almost certainly be tethered. These rules do not apply to re-manufactured phones, which are given new serial numbers but which have older components and may have the older version of iBoot.

If you have a week 38 3GS, the only way to be sure is to check your iBoot version. Please, pcs are junk, please stop posting things that are incoherent and/or factually inaccurate.

He's been spreading misinformation all over the board, and doesn't look to be about to stop. In the past few days he has made at least the following claims:

1) Microsoft owns 40% of Apple.
2) DFU mode restore is the only way to completely remove a jailbreak.
4) iPhones are manufactured in California.
5) iPhones before week 40 have untethered jailbreaks.
5) Week 38 iPhones are guaranteed to have an untethered jailbreak.
6) The DevTeam erases your bootrom and replaces it with their own when you jailbreak.
7) Apple "moved" the 24kpwn exploit (which he seems to think is a file) in the new 3GSes, and the Dev Team just haven't "found it" yet.
8) Geohot has already made an untethered jailbreak for the ipod touch 3g, and is releasing it as soon as Apple releases 3.1.3.

I'm sure I've missed some. I've come to dread seeing his name on a thread because I know I'll have to correct his very bad advice.

He also posted a link to a supposed untethered jailbreak that turned out (quelle surprise?) to be malware. And when confronted about his continuous misinformed and damaging posts in that thread he intentionally reposted it.

Also "the RAM in my MacBook is not user serviceable, therefore you voided your warranty by upgrading the RAM in your iMac", which is wrong in so many ways that it's almost Zen.

His profile says he's 14, which would explain but not excuse the situation.

Edit: and "apple doesn't sell refurbished iphones, they only use them for replacements, wait lol i think i saw a refurbished mac once just google it"
