New to Jailbreaking. Some brief questions:

I am new to Jailbreaking and have been searching this forum for preparation. I have been reluctant to proceed in the past, but really want the SBSettings utility. This feature is totally awesome. However, I may consider the following:

  • SMS Quickreply
  • Backgrounder
  • Customize SMS tones
  • Getting rid of that darn "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone" message (I know it's not; now leave me alone and stop asking me!!!)

I am running Windows and using the latest firmware 3.1.2 on a iPhone 3g with an expired warranty.
I have no need to unlock.
I want to keep everything running as smoothly as it does now.

  1. It seems that my best option is Blackra1n, as Pwnage is only for Mac. Correct?
  2. Is there a potential for problems syncing afterwords?
  3. Are there any battery life issues?
  4. By limiting my hacks to those listed, will I see any effect on overall performance?
  5. Does jailbreaking result in more frequent crashes or freezes? (currently, I rarely have any).

Those are some good reasons to JB, some of my favorites listed there.
1. Yes
2. No problems, you can sync and do everything else your iphone did before you jailbreaked.
3. Some say theres a slight battery decrease but I havent noticed much of a difference myself.
4. You shouldnt see much slowdown, are you using a 3G or 3GS? On 2G and 3G models there seems to be some lag associated with the JB but you wont have problems with freezing or crashing apps unless you're backgrounding alot.
 
You will see the occasional broken or failed springboard screen and it may be a little sluggish at times, but overall it is worth having all of the jail broken apps.

1) PwnageTool is currently being ported to Windows and Linux, and you can restore to a custom firmware someone else created on a Mac, but you are right that blackra1n is the only Windows-based solution currently available.

2) Jailbreaking should not affect your iTunes sync at all.

3) If you you install a lot of memory-resident applications it may affect your battery life, but I honestly don't notice it. Of course, if you run things in the background it will use battery like you have the app open (since you do!).

4) You may find some deterioration in performance on your 3G, especially if you are running things in the background; you can't expect to run more apps concurrently with the same performance as running only one. You can only know if it's a problem for you by trying. And you can always uninstall memory-resident packages if it creates a problem.

5) Jailbreaking by itself doesn't increase crash or freeze frequency. Some apps, especially those that are in early beta or alpha stage, are less stable and might cause a crash. The apps you're talking about are pretty stable, though.

Finally, if you find a way to get rid of the accessory warning, please let me know; I've never been able to find one even for a jailbroken iPhone.

Thanks to all. I'm gonna JB my device this week after I've done a solid backup of everything.

Didn't read the whole thread there. Thanks for the heads up. That's exactly the type of problem I want to avoid. I wish someone had a reliable solution for this!

Popup blocker gets rid of those messages but it's 99c/1.99 (can't remember off the top of my head).

It's extremely effective and you can customize what popups to get rid of. I can dock and put my phone in my car without those annoying messages.
 
I have had my iPhone jailbroken since I first got it. The last real problem I had was 5 months ago. Yes, be prepared for some occasionally slow running or maybe the rare restore. It definitely has benefits though!
