Hi all.

Whilst not new to Mac OSX, having owned Intel based Mac's since 2015, early retirement has tempted me to 'dabble' with a G3 iBook 4,3 laptop.

No matter what I do I can't seem to install OS 9.2. To be honest I have tried to install various 'flavours' from OS8 upwards.

I can boot from a CD successfully but when I try to install the OS to the hard drive it always tells me it can't proceed.

Can anyone suggest a simple step-by step process that I can follow to resolve this?

If the install it is laptop specific - I can post back exact details.

The laptop is in really good condition and it would be a shame if I couldn't resolve this.

Thanks in advance

Hi Thanks for the reply.

I have an iBook G3/700 model number A1007.

I have attached a couple of photos.

The first shows my desktop after a 9.2.1 boot from CD

The other shows the error message after I try to instal by clicking on the MacOS Install icon.

Thanks

Thanks for the images. I now understand the issue. :)

It would seem that you're using a machine specific installer - which isn't compatible with your iBook. What you need is the universal retail installer. Download and burn this one.

That should get you up and running. :D

That worked perfectly thanks. However now I appear to be stuck in a screen resolution that I can't change. Any idea what to do. There are ATI extensions in the extension folder but when I click on them it tells me to make sure they are in the extensions folder .

I have attached a photo to show what I am stuck with. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have just noticed that from the previous link you sent me there are some ATI drivers, I will try those first.

Thanks. I now have Stuffit expander and the ATI drivers installed. The iBook is running full screen with millions of colours. Just got to get the mouse scroll wheel working now (model A1152) and I'll be good to go.

I suppose the Macintosh Garden is the place to go for things like Adobe reader and other software?

Once again many thanks. Regards Ron.

Excellent news! :D

Basically yes and for anything that you can't find on there, the Internet Archive is also a good port of call. If you still get no joy - post a request and one of us might be able to point you in the right direction.

Once again many thanks. Regards Ron.

You're very welcome, Ron.

Have fun with the iBook. :)
