New to Mac

Hi everyone!!! I have a question about building a Mac Pro out of replacement parts. I am thinking of buildimg one of the 5,1 models. I have research in these forums and elsewhere about building one. I've seen people have been successful in building them. The only thing a have not found for my build is a restoration DVD or the install/restore DVD for that particular model. I would like to know where or how to acquire them from or if I could just purchase a retail version of the os and install it like you would on a PC. The reason I ask is that I'm new to the Mac line and this would be my first Mac. Any suggestions or advice would really be appreciated.

I can't help you with the building part, but if you buy Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard for 29 USD, you will have all the drivers for that MP.

Building a Mac Pro out of replacement parts would likely cost much more than buying a new one (unless someone gives you most of the parts for free).

Thanks for the response! What is the difference between the retail version of Mac OS X snow leopard and the ones that come with a computer when it's purchase. I've read that the ones that come with the purchase of a computer are gray while the retail ones are purple.

Typically the restore disc only works with the computer model it is shipped with. The retail OS disc works on a wide range of supported macs.

New macs come with iLife disc. Retail OS disc does not include that.

Keep in mind you can get a new 2010 Mac Pro for about $2330 shipped or a refurb 2010 Mac Pro for about $2120. Both will come with aluminum keyboard, magic mouse, Snow Leopard, iLife, and a 1-year warranty.

I'd be very careful about adding up all of the costs before you start the project. Your frankenmac project may come close to the above listed prices without having things like the warranty.
