new to macforums & my iMac

so i didn't see a [newbie] section to introduce myself... so i just thought maybe i'd do it here ;o)

hi. i'm melissarae! my boyfriend, Lee, and i just made the big switch from pc to mac :D it's something i've been wanting to do for years, but i never had the money for until now. and i have to say its been the best purchase i have ever made in my life! i bought a Refurbished iMac 20-inch 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and Lee bought a black Refurbished MacBook 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Lee has never been a "computer geek" like i have been most of my life... but i have a feeling his new found love of his black macbook will change that! ;)

more about me, i'm a graphic artist working for a large private university designing online courses. Lee and i are proud parents to a 15month old little boy. i'm a myspace addict, cause it's easy for me to keep in touch with my friends/family up north. however i am looking for other places out there on the world wide web that spark my interest. i grew up between tampa, florida & louisville, kentucky... and unfortunately i currently reside in the tampa area.

ok so that's me. :p i wont bore you anymore. i just thought i'd introduce myself so that you guys would know a little more about me... if you have any questions feel free to ask. i know i'll be asking a few around here! this is a great place... thanks!
 
i just bought Time Capsule 500GB yesterday along with a Samsung ML1630 monochrome laser printer.... everything hooked up just fine ;o) i'm soooooo in love with my new setup! now i'm just waiting for Adobe CS3 to be delivered next week hopefully ;o)
 
wow, you are really going all out!! congrats on the switch and congrats on your baby! my friend has a 16 month old son and he is DEFINITELY a handful.
 
Welcome aboard. If you want to really stir things up, post some comments about your opinion of the quality of your 20" screen. :D
 
Posting from my new 3.06/4gig/500GB/8800gs.
So far, so good. Slight gradient "problem" but not really a problem at all. As with any flat display, there is a shift in perceived brightness based on viewing angle, but this display is MUCH better than my Powerbook G4 (Hi Res- which is pretty dang good).
This new iMac is just pure sweetness!:D

i have to admit this display is WAAAAAAY better than any other display i've ever owned. (i came soooo close to buying an additional display that was on clearance at BestBuy for $559 for a 20" apple display, but decided to go with TC instead.)

oh yeah and did i mention my 4GB of memory will be here on Wednesday for me to install? :D

Nice. You'll like having 4GB of RAM, especially if you use many applications at once or use 1 particularly demanding application. It helps more than you might think.

If you have other questions about your Mac, don't be afraid to ask them. I love helping people with their Mac problems, and I get a particular kick out of helping recent switchers. ;)

Like melissarae, I am also new to macforums and got my first mac, a 20" iMac aluminum, 2.66 GHz! I really like it, and I didn't observe the screen gradient issues that others had reported. I'm not a photo editor or graphic designer so I'm not an expert in color accuracy :), but I do like what I see and loving the mac!

Trying to get used to the font smoothing though, I got too familiar with Windows ClearType...

Welcome! I hope your iMac serves you well. I recommend calibrating your Mac's display, as it often ships from the factory slightly out of whack. As for the font smoothing, it's taken some getting used to for me also, but for a completely different reason - I'm used to the way Mac OS 9 did font smoothing, rather than Windows :eek:

LOL! Having now read Melissa's glowing review of her new iMac's display I would not be the least bit surprised if she was paid a visit by someone from the local chapter of the Church of Gradientology.

Congratulations on your new Mac(s) and welcome, Melissa. :)

hmmm.... now I haven't done any graphics or anything on it yet. so maybe i have spoke too soon. I will have to report back to you on this one after I get CS3 installed.

what is the issue? do iMac displays have a problem with gradients?

Yeah, you mostly get people complaining about the 20 inch panels since they are of the TN variety. The 24 inch panels are supposedly S-IPS and therefore higher quality - i may be wrong here - so less people complain about those ones. The gloss screen tends to peeve some people off. It's mostly the graphic design/photo enthusiast people who do the complaining (no offence) but I've had to return an iMac due to a bad screen and I'm no graphic design person. My replacement had a 1cm long hair underneath the glass too!!!

Pro users will recommend an ACD, but even the peripherals forums and the reviews at the apple store have people complaining about "pink cast" or "pink colour bleed"

If you like the look of what you've got then great. Use it and enjoy. People will always complain. One good thing about this forum is people will also advertise how much they love their machines and the fact they have NO issues whatsoever.
 
Hi, congrats for your purchases, I'm new to MacRumors forums too, and I just got a brand new 24" iMac yesterday. It's an amazing machine!! :)
 
just installed my 4GB of memory... and man going from 1GB to 4GB is a HUGE :D difference!!! i'm extremely happy with my iMac :D

and i'm happy that there's a place i can come and brag about it hehe!
