New to Steam...help?

Hi,

The first and last time I used Steam was a friend's account for Counter Strike. I'm interested in Portal since it's free until May 24.

Here are my questions:

1. Do I go Steam's website, download the program and set up a new account?
2. Can I set up an account for my sis?
3. Can Portals be downloaded for PC then played on a Mac in the future?

While you're at it, I highly recommend trying Torchlight too.
