Hey guys!

I have a few questions if someone could help me.

My uncle gave me his Mac Pro 5,1 for free, but the machine is in it’s original condition so the following specs are:

Quad Core 2.8
8GB Ram
1TB HDD
Radeon 5770

I would like to know, do you guys suggest me to upgrade this or sell and some money to buy MP 6,1?

If i would upgrade this baby, how would i do that?
Which cables do i need?

I would like to run at least Mojave...

Thanks!

If you have that 5.1 (for free) do not get rid for a 6.1
A 6.1 is pretty much non-upgradeable so I think you would regret it.
Even though the 5.1 is 10yrs old, a 6.1 is 7yrs old, at least with the 5.1 you can replace parts.

Hi , you can upgrade the CPU to a six core, upgrade the ram and video card. Add SSD. You may also refer to this upgrade guide

Complete Guide to Install Mojave

The 2013 6,1 cylinder Mac Pro’s GPU cannot be upgraded as the design is proprietary and still expensive up to now.

Okay guys thanks for the tips!

This mac has currently 1TB empty (no mac os)hard drive inside, and i ordered Samsung 860 EVO SSD 500GB, 32GB of Ram and RX 580 Sapphire Pulse and the 6x 3.33ghz X5680 GPU...

What do you suggests me to do?

Should i first install High sierra to this drive or the SSD and the replace Radeon 5770 with the RX580?

Or Can i install rx 580 and than install the system!

Currently i tried to connect this computer to Dell U2719DC with MiniDP to HDMI adapter and i did not get anything, my monitor keeps saying no signal.

I think that i should first connect Mac Pro to a DVI monitor with DVI cable and than install High Sierra, then i can replace the card to RX 580 and install Mojave?

Thanks!

If. Only. There. Were. Answers. To. these questions.

Congratulations on your new adventure.

There is a wealth of information in the sticky threads at the top of this forum, which directly answer you questions. My recommendations is to review them and proceed accordingly. The good news this is all been refined such that as long as you follow the information, you'll be successful.

Please note that you are modifying your system beyond it's original design, and it's rewarding. It's up to you to perform this - there are no shortcuts. My observation is that for most who read and participate in this forum, it's somewhat satisfying.
