New touchscreen iMac or NONE AT ALL

After the Microsoft announcement yesterday and the Apple non-announcement today, I just think it's time. Either the next generation of iMacs need to be touchscreen or they might as well shutter any iMac announcements forever.

Either touchscreen or nothing. I hate to say it, but I don't think anything else will do to be even somewhat satisfying (because you can stealth bump specs any day of the week).

Because a 1k price premium is such a coup that Apple should be embarrassed out of the market? I'm not sure I agree. And here's the thing, I like the Surface Studio. I'm just not the target market for it, and I'm not going to pay the premium for it over a comparable iMac.

I dont think apple will release a touchscreen iMac either and agree on the smudge comment. Maybe if I do get the Surface I would wear a glove with it, otherwise total cleaning nightmare.

I love love love the idea of the Surface Studio. I am a photographer and spend a ton of time using my Wacom tablet for editing. I can only imagine the fun it would be to have a hybrid screen like the Studio.

It would be so easy to marry a Mac Mini with an oversized iPad screen on an articulating arm. Of course there is the software hurdle, but that is what the Apple tax is for, to figure that out. I think for anyone who uses a wacom or Cintiq type of monitor would love the Studio with an Apple bent.

I think if you use the Studio with a pen you would really minimize smudging.

I disagree. I have an Asus Zenbook 15.6 / 4k / touchscreen and using it is awkward and slow. Much faster and more accurate to use the track pad and keyboard. Apple conducted UI studies that showed touch screen laptops put the wrist in an awkward angle and long term use causes pain. Definitely not something you want to deal with.

I use an iMac27 8-12 hours a day with a touchpad and never think to reach up and touch the screen.
 
Jony Ive said himself in a interview a few days ago that they won't be making any Touchscreen Mac and that they decided that many years ago and are sticking to the philosophy. They also said they want to keep iOS and MacOS as different operating systems (hence, different UI).
 
After the release of the new MacBook Pros, there is almost no possibility at all for a touchscreen iMac. The Touch Bar is clearly intended as an alternative to a fully touchscreen Mac, by positioning specific controls optimized for touch usage more conveniently than having to reach for them on the main display.

Hopefully there will be some way to bring the Touch Bar to the iMac in the future. But for now I'm sure Apple wants to keep it a MBP exclusive.
