New Upper Bar Icons: What Are They, Please ?

Hello,

Have gotten Time machine going for first time.
Msg. says it has about another hr to go for first backup.

Question: On the top bar there are now 2 icons that I've never seen before.
They both are a small, horiz., black bar with a Green circle.
Also, one says 32 degrees (the symbol for degrees i dont have)
The other says 35 degrees.

Clicking on, one says Apple SSD
The other says HDD

What are these, please ?

Why are they appearing now, and never before ?

Time Machine related, in some way ?

Not time machine related. Probably iStat Menus or menumeters if you have either of those apps installed.

Btw, attaching a screenshot would be helpful. cmd+shift+5

Yes, you do if on a Mac or iPad.

° is Shift-Option 8 on any Mac.

You can also try holding the 8 key and selecting ° but that doesn’t always work including here,

I forget how to do it on an iPad but it’s there, too.

The two events are not directly related. I suspect that in the process of getting Time Machine up and going you have recently installed some sort of monitoring software for your hard drives.

That's what I was thinking. They probably installed the software that came with the drives, which in general is pretty much pointless bloat. Though I did install recently a WD utility from their website that lets me upgrade the firmware of the drive, along with another utility that lets me configure the sleep timer and led light for my drives, so that was useful. Though I'm still annoyed at how loud the 6TB drive is compared to my older 4TB drive. About to pitch it unless I can get it running in a drawer with some foam. I didn't have it plugged in very often before moving from a MacBook Pro to an iMac.
