So, since yesterday. After plugging in an iPod Touch with an official Lighting to USB-C cable, the cable itself began acting very strange. It's in great shape, but might take up to 10 minutes before charging any iOS device.

And so just this morning, after plugging my iPad Pro into the MacBook Pro, I left the room, and when I came back a few moments later, I smelled a very strong burnt plastic odor...

After that, OS X Sierra was acting very strangely. So I decided to do a reboot, and that was it. I could no longer boot back into OS X. What's worse is, now the machine has lost all power, and the only thing I can get at this point is the "dead battery please charge" screen.

My large charger that plugs the MacBook Pro into the wall has the same smell on one end of the USBC cord, and there's also a foul smell on the top right USBC port on the mbp.

So I can only get the "dead battery" screen when plugging in a 3rd party USB3 to USBC cable from a 2.2Amp brick tablet charger.

I tried resetting the SMC, but I don't think it's working well since the battery can't be completely drained on this new mbp. I'd love to unplug the internal battery, but this stupid thing is sealed with microscopic star ⭐️ shaped screws... wtf apple...

Anyone have some advice on how to drain the damn battery?

Thanks
[doublepost=1501205563][/doublepost]Sigh... I feel like I'm dealing with Hackintosh issues on TonyMac.

Go to an Apple store if you have one near you. Explain the situation, hopefully they can investigate the issue on the spot and get you a replacement.

If you aren’t near an Apple store, your best bet is to call them up. Their customer service tends to be very helpful, just give it a shot.

You absolutely DON'T need to "drain the battery" to do an SMC reset.
The SMC reset takes only a few seconds.
Taken from this article
If the battery is nonremovable:
  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Unplug the MagSafe or USB-C power adapter from your computer.
  3. Using the built-in keyboard, press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the power button at the same time. Hold these keys and the power button for 10 seconds.
If you have a 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button.
  4. Release all keys.
  5. Reconnect the power adapter.
  6. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.
Battery is not mentioned at all. It's just a hardware reset.
I suspect that won't help. You have likely burned out some electronic component on the logic board, maybe the power board. If you have a MBPro with the USB-C ports, I don't know if those have a separate part for the power cord. I suspect it will mean replacing the logic board.
And, the above post is your best plan now - get thee hither to an Apple store, or call AppleCare

phew,
Okay, so it looks like the charger which came with this MacBook Pro is the problem.

Thankfully I am able to get it up and running now for some reason with a 2.2 Amp tablet charger with a USB-3 to USB-C cable.

I think that I'll definitely request a replacement, one of the USB-C ports might be dead, it still smells like a short circuit.
