New user could do with some Help!! (movies in Xvid or DIVX format)

Hi Guys

New user here, and here is my situation

Currently have XBox running XBMC as my Media Centre, attached to a network with 1Tb of Network Attached Storage for Movies etc

I have purchased ATV with the idea of replacing the Xbox as its getting long in the tooth and cannot handle the new HD formats.

Here is my problem, I have purchased the ATV and found out it will not handle my od movies in Xvid or DIVX formats, as I have over 500 stored on hard drive I really want to keep access to them

I understand that you can install the codecs BUT I DONT HAVE A MAC, or any access to one


I have purchased a 2.5" PATA hard drive and I am looking to upgrade the ATV with this and the required codecs, leaving the 40gb as original in case I ever need to go back to it.

What I am looking for is someone who has already been thru this who could help with getting the required files etc onto the new drive ready to install.

I dont expect charity and am happy to cover costs etc, (I am the North Midlands, but would consider help from anywhere!!)

If anyone can help with this otherwise the unit is no real use to me and will be going back to apple under the 14 day satisfaction policy.

Please Take Pity on a NON Mac owner!!

Hey there,

I dont have my atv hacked so i cant personally help you but I've read up on the subject and I'm pretty sure your going to at least need to get a OSX dvd and put it on a hard drive to use do any kind of hacking right now. If you want a better place for advice, try

If you had a mac, you could have coverted them with isquint or visualhub. I'm sure there are similar programs for windows?

there is nothing on the windows side like isquint, not free and as easy to use anyway.

Xilisoft video converter has converted all files that i have come across, some loose audio sync, but at $35 it is cheap and quite quick. The demo version only converts 5mins (i think) and any audio sync problem show more further on in the films. I would be interested if any knows of a better product or a solution to this audio problem.
