Hello to all. I am a new member here, and new to the iphone in genaral having picked up a 3GS at the beggining of the month. This is my first "smart phone" and so far, except with a couple small complaints, I've been pretty impressed.

Anyhow, on to my question. Yesterday I was looking for a type of app in the app store and couldn't find it. I tried a few different variations of what the name could be to see if I could find what I was looking for, but nothing popped up. I decided to search online to see if I could find a name to an app that would let me do what I wanted to do. I eventually found the app that I was looking for and downloaded it right off the internet onto my phone. As soon as it was done downloading, I went into the app store to find the app and it wasn't there. No matches found. My question is are there some apps that aren't in the app store but that you have to get off the internet? It was my understanding that you have to get all the apps throught the app store. If you can just download them online, why don't more developers just put their apps online for download and skip the app approval process?

My other question is about the GPS in the 3gs. A lot of time it shows me driving in the grass and off the road and such. Is this normal? I understand this isn't a stand alone GPS unit so if this is normal, I'm not really all that disappointed as I really only use trapster, and it doesn't really matter as long as it gives me the warnings, I just want to make sure there isn't an issue with the GPS in the phone. I know most aren't really thrilled about the GPS for bieng laggy or what not, but I don't really hear of people talking about driving in the grass and through houses and such. Thanks, RV.

All iPhone and iPod Touch applications can only be downloaded through the app store.

If you've jailbroken your phone, you could install other applications.

Ok. I think I figured it out. It loaded a shortcut onto the home screen. Looks and seems like an app but I guess just a short cut. Thanks for your time. Sorry for my ignorance, lol. Any thoughts on the gps?

Well trapster isn't really the best navigation tool. How accurate are you expecting the tracking to be, as gps will never be spot on.
Depending on weather conditions/radio signals even the best GPS devices can have a reading to 30 meters off.

If you use a proper GPS navigation app it will load its own maps and automatically place you on the nearest road/route you are taking instead of putting you on a pavement or in a house.
