I updated to iOS 8 without thinking anything bad would happen (I think this marks the third time I've been wrong about updating iOS...) but then discovered Xcode 5.1.1 wasn't able to build for my iPhone. It says that it needs a newer SDK to be able to do that.
So I went to the dev site and... the SDKs aren't there anymore, because they're all rolled into Xcode now. In the dev center, I see that Xcode 6.0.1 is available, but I don't like downloading Xcode, other than beta versions, from the dev center lest something funky happens from mixing downloads from the Mac App Store with downloads with the dev center.
I went to the Mac App Store and checked and it said that 5.1.1 was still the current version available, which it said I had installed. I also noticed that it said I could update from OS X 10.9.4 to 10.9.5, so I did that.
After the update to OS X 10.9.5, the Mac App Store still said Xcode 5.1.1 was the current version, but it no longer said I had it installed. Double checked Finder and I could clearly see I had it. I tried installing from the Mac App Store to see what would happen, and it placed a new item Xcode.appdownload, in my Applications folder. It appears to have a slightly lighter blue paper in the icon than Xcode 5.1.1, but it's not the cleaned up / redesigned icon of Xcode 6. It seems to be almost done installing... I'll update to let you know what I find about this when it finishes...
Edit: It finished installing the new copy of Xcode 5.1.1... it looks like it might be a very slightly different build or something (unfortunately I didn't check the build number before updating)... but it definitely doesn't have the iOS 8 SDK.
So... how do I get the iOS 8 SDK? Am I stuck having to download Xcode 6.0.1 from the Dev Center? Is there no other way to get it, even though iOS 8 was released today?
